best day to visit rothenburg?

by Gundachetty

Hi,
As sept 2nd and 3rd,2007 are festival days.. can anyone suggest me the best day to visit so that I can see the Mr.Draught show (will it be in english?) and the Shephreds dance. When and where will these events happen in the town?

Thanks in advance for all your replies!

The Reichsstadt-Festtage are from 31. August - 2. September 2007.

The 2 shows you want to see are only on Sunday, 2. September 2007.

No. Nearly all (former) imperial cities in Germany have their city festival where they celebrate in first place themselves. It's a citizens festival. Maybe in Rothenburg degenerated to a tourist event somehow.

Travel Tips for Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Walk the city walls

by Sjalen

There are many types of walls, but these "built over" ones with wooden parts belong to my favourites, and Rothenburg was like a mini Tallinn in that aspect. Closed in winter as they get slippery, but otherwise, walking them is a great way to orientate yourself and get good photos.

POINTS OF INTEREST

by LoriPori

I will highlight Rothenburg ob der Tauber' many POINTS OF INTEREST. Hans and I found this town so magical - MEDIEVAL MAGIC. It had so much to offer. The following is most of the town's highlights:

Marktplatz: Gothic & Renaissance Rathaus - Town Hall
Ratstrinkstube - Council Tavern
St. George's Fountain
Gasthof Marktplatz
Marien-Apothke

Plonlein - Little Square
Rodertor - Roeder Tower
Roeder Gate
Old Forge - Alte Schmiede
Baumeisterhaus - Ober Schmiedgasse 3
Fortifications and the wall walkway
Medieval Crime Museum

Wippgalgen - some sort of cruelty in former times

by globetrott

Take a closer look at this strange construction, that you may see in front of the "Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum" (medieval museum of crimes)
This construction is named : Wippgalgen mit Tachkäfig and an english translation might be "Strappado with ducking cage" and it was used as a punishment mainly for bakers, who cheated by making their breads too small etc. The baker was put into the cage and was dipped into the water again and again.
You may see this exhibit just in front of the museum

the old smithy dates back to 1649

by globetrott

This old smithy dates back to the year 1649 and is one ofthe most beautiful houses that you may see, when you walk on top of the townwall between Galgentor and Spitalstor.
Today the building is privately owned, but when you get there, you will still see plenty of the tools and instruments exposed there in front of the house and in that little terrace under the arcades of the building.
The beautiful guild-sign of this smithy is shown in one of my "Local custom"-tips !

Words fail me.....

by Maryimelda about Baumeisterhaus

This restaurant can be found in the Baumeisterhaus, which is an historic old building which I have described in my Things To Do Tips. The building itself is worth a look, but the restaurant should not be missed on any visit to Rothenburg. In retrospect, I wish I had planned to have an evening meal there during my stay, but somehow it just didn't work out that way, but I had a wonderful mid afternoon break there and was absolutely gobsmacked. The staff were not just friendly because they had to be. With these people I got the feeling that their welcoming and caring attitudes were 100% genuine. I can't describe the decor, you will need to look at the pics for that. Be sure to enlarge them for a better view. I chose hot chocolate and apple strudel with cream and ice cream. Far too extravagant for a tubby like me, I know but who could resist?
