After Rothenburg then what before Munich?
by MeOMy
Should I make a stop at any towns between Rothenburg and Munich? On our trip in April we're coming from Frankfurt, then Heidelburg, then Rothenburg before proceeding on -- basically all the major tourist stops I guess (staying for a day or two at each town). I just wanted to know if there are any towns that we shouldn't skip over.
We're only going to be in Germany for 9-days and for two or so days would like to go to Salzburg and perhaps Hallstatt. So I'm trying to find out if more time should be spent on other towns or if from Rothenburg we should head to Munich area to have enough time there and Austria.

Nurnberg is certainly a worthwhile stop with some great medival architecture. I just wish that I had spent more than a day there. Enjoy!

If you feel you like Rothenburg but would like a less tourist-filled town, you can drive to Dinklesbuhl near Rothenburg during the ride down to Munich.
It has a complete town wall and the charm of Rothenburg but not all the tour buses.

a classical trip is the romantische strasse, you could travel frankfurt-wuerzburg-rothenburg-heidelberg(and dinkelbuehl as already proposed)- even down to neuschwanstein. hard core tourists from japan make the trip in two days, but i would advice to take more time. as the road is used most of the time north- south ( comming from frankfurt) you can anytime move towards munich/ salzburg

The Romantic Road's cool, too.
Travel Tips for Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg city...
by CandS
A view of the city of Rothenburg from one of the towers... There is a wall all the way around the city...
If you get the chance go up one of the towers...there are great views from the towers on the walls...although I don't know how safe the ladders to the top are... ;)
X-Mas the whole Year...
by globetrott
Normally a shop, selling only Christmas-decorations all year long would have no chance at all in Europe, BUT in Rothenburg so plenty of tourists from Japan and USA are a guearantee for a good business. So this is one of the lovely traps :
Kaethe Wohlfahrts Christmas-shop and it is open all year and it has this wonderful oldtimer-car in front with plenty of parcels...
Marling Menu Master- your key to real German food
by davequ
Raingear Much film for a good 35mm or a HI-res (5Mb+) digital camera. Germany's countryside is beautiful.
Bring filters, as it is hazy often. Bring the Marling Menu Master shown. You need to go to local places to get good German food, but wait until you see a real German menu... aaauugghhh!!! (if you don't speak or read German)
The Marling will save your life and open the key to great German cuisine.
Here's a link (below) for one place you can pick one up:

Ribs!!!
by oldgi about Zur holl
Zur Hoell has been a restaurant since the 900's! Upon entering the door you pass through a heavy red curtain. The theme for the restaurant is obvious by the two small red devils that are situated by the beer tappers. The restaurant is small and quaint. The tables and chairs are of dark wood. There is also seating in the cellar which resembles a grotto, this is hoell. The menu is limited but the food is very good. Ribs are their specialty, served with BBQ sauce on the side. The portions are generous, so bring an appetite but make a reservation, tables fill fast. They also serve a very good wine.
Souvenirs from the restaurant can also be purchased. So you show your friends that you have been to hoell and back. RIBS!!! Finger lickin', lip smackin', belly pattin' gooooooood. A very fun place.
The Yellow House
by WBrasil
Rothenburg is the most beautiful of the small towns in the German Romantic Road. This quarter, with the yellow house, is one of the most photographed sights in the city, because is the only place where you can see two towers of the walls that protect the town.
