Can't help with car rental, but you can find out everything you need to know about trains and fares (in English) here:

If you always want to be back in Munich in the evening I would not bother renting a car because there would not be much time left to visit other places on the way. That is why I recommend the train.

It takes about 3 hours to get to Rothenburg, so 6 hours in total just travelling. If you do not bother a 3:20 hour trip you can both travel on one Bayern-Ticket by using only regional and no high-speed trains. It is not much slower than the fast trains, but a lot cheaper.

It takes to hours to Füssen by train and you can also get there on one Bayern-Ticket as the trip is on a regional train anyway.

Train is also the safer option in winter, as it could snow around this time of the year - although it seems to become a tradition that snow falls only after Christmas while everyone dreams of a white Christmas. If it snows both regions can get a lot of snow, Füssen in the mountains, of course, but also Rothenburg. The autobahn A 7 in this region is infamous for its wintery conditions.

Travel Tips for Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Try the schneeballen

by girladventure

Snowball in english, the schneeballen is a specialty of Rothenburg. It is a ball of deep fried pastry dough wrapped around itself like a ball of yarn, then either dusted with sugar and cinnamon or dipped in one or more of a variety of icings -- often chocolate or lemon. You will see it in every bakery in the the town and I think you can only get it from there.

STEIFF BEARS

by LoriPori

Steiff is a German-based plush toy company known for high quality and stiff (steiff) prices.(sorry couldn't resist). Begun by Margarete Steiff in 1880. Her nephew Richard joined in 1897 and gave the company an enormous boost in popularity by creating the teddy bear in 1902. In 1907 STEIFF manufactured 974,000 bears and continues to grow to this day. The old original bears are very much sought after and can command some pretty high prices.

You can't have it your way

by islaazul

One of the unfortunate things about the rediscovery of Rothenburg as one of the most well-preserved medieval towns, is that tourists have decended in a major way on the town.

Special requests (dressing on the side, french fries instead of sauerkraut) are not an accepted part of dining out, as it is in the states.

inside St. Wolfgang church

by globetrott

St. Wolfgangs-church looks rather simple from OUTside, but it has 2 really beautifully decorated altars dating back to the 15th century with nice wooden sculptures.
This church is really worth to leave the beaten path of the big tourist-groups , who will normally totally skip this great museum and church.
In the back of the church you may climb up the spiral staircase to the Museum of sheep-farming and wool-production. One of the best attractions of that museum is shown on my next tip & picture : The "Schaefertanz-Kabinett"!

Must try different yummy wursts!

by chuying

A lot of various wursts in the open market. We tried all of them (during the trip). I personally like the one that is long and slim and the curry wurst. However, they're all very delicious. Avg a piece with a bun is 2-3.5 euro. This is the one close to the Town Hall market
