The Wall
by flyingscot4
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the best of the medieval cities in Europe. There are others, but Rothenburg is still the best. Yes, there are lots of tourists, but if you get there early and stay overnight it will be one of the best 36 hour periods you will have in Europe.
When you come to Rothenburg, the first thing that you come to is the wall and one of the gates. This set of photos has to do with the wall itself. This wall completely encircles Rothenburg, which is shaped kind of like a question mark. The town has a number of gates as well as towers. They are connected by a covered sentry walkway which provided protection from the elements. The walkway is still in use today and I suggest that everyone take the walkway around the city at least once during their stay.

Photo 5 Weisser Turm (White Tower) I first came to Rothenburg in 1962. It certainly was not as polished as it is today, and there were still farm animals inside the wall which added to the charm, but otherwise things are much as I remember them from over 40 years ago. What has changed is the number of people who speak English. When I was first there the vast majority of tourists were from Germany. There are certainly hundreds of German tourists that still come to Rothenburg and while they are still in the majority, the numbers of foreign visitors is huge. Most of the volume selling pamphlets are available in about 20 different languages, if that is any indication.
Today, Rothenburg is still a very friendly and accommodating community that welcomes tourists year round. The hospitality is still wonderful as are the sights. I could actually spend a full week just wandering the streets. It is a wonderful place to be a guest.
BAUMEISTERHAUS - MASTER BUILDER HOUSE
by LoriPori
Located on Obere Schmiedgasse 3, next to the Marktplatz heading to the Plonlein, is the BAUMEISTERHAUS which is a restaurant housed in an antique Patrician Residence built in 1596. It has Rothenburg's most beautiful courtyard ( which only guests can visit ), The restaurant is known for its Bavarian fare including roast suckling pig, potato dumplings, sauerbraten and spatzle (small dumplings).
Note the two rows of statues on the facade of the building. They depict the seven virtues and the seven vices.
Bratwurst mit Brot
by Tetreus
Grap a snack...........take a sandwich with a saucage inside, it's called ' Bratwurst mit Brot '.
But ...be careful,.........cause in the winter the roads can be very slippery because of ice and snow. While eating and walking at the same time, you could slip..........and the saucage could escape from the sandwich...and you don't even notice it.
The next bite you want to take...........is from an empty sandwich ! :-)))
;-)) It happened to Andrea !!
Steinach
by CandS
On our way to Rothenburg we had to stop off at a small town call Steinach and wait for the next train to Rothenburg. It was an hour till our next train so we decided to have a look around town...being 6 am or so nothing was open except one small cafe/bakery. We ended up going in to get some breakfast and no one could speak English...haha...we had a bit of fun ordering what we wanted and then we sat outside to eat...
Everyone that walked into the shop stopped off to say "Guten Morgen" or "Hallo" and some even asked if we were having a good morning/day (I guess since I can't speak German but knew some words). Everyone was very friendly and we even tried saying Good Morning back in German...we always got a laugh so I guess they worked out we weren't locals... ;)
Take a snowball for 2nd breakfast
by globetrott about Bäckerei Trump
Bäckerei Trump is a small bakery next to Markusturm. I was searching for a 2nd breakfast and I wanted to try the famous Schneeballen, that I saw at so many places. So this is the Schneeballen / snowball, and when you click on my picture, you may see the principal of it.
Make sure your teeth are in good order...
...or be prepared to wave good-bye to them, when eating Schneeballen !!
Once in a lifetime is enough, BUT I may imagine that this desert gets better, when stored a long time, maybe in a tin-box, like in the old times, like cookies at Christmas-time.
I payed 1,40 Euros for the Schneeballen.
