Rothenburg to Dachau

by nelle1958

I will be spending 3 days in Rothenburg in December. I would like to visit Dachau one of those days. Is there an easy way to travel between the 2 places? I can only take the bus or train.

You can get there by train which will take you about 3 hours. If you want to visit the concentration camp you can take a bus from Dachau railway station to the camp.

When checking connections on www.bahn.de take care you take a train connection with as little changes as possible. The more often you have to change the train the higher the risk of missing one, and those regional trains do not wait.

There is one connection with only two changes on regional trains. This has the advantage that it is also cheaper, and you can take the Bayern Ticket.

A long trip. Rothenburg is connected to the train station at Steinach by a shuttle. From Steinach to say Nuremberg will usually be two more trains with a change at Ansbach. There are occasional direct trains along the same route but without a transfer. From Nuremberg, it is probably quicker to take the ICE express direct to Munich and then the local train out to Dachau rather than take a slower train from Nuremberg. Long trip.

I think a bit more than three hours is not a long trip for that distance - only if you miss a connection. And BTW Trains start at Rothenburg's railway station. The "shuttle" to Steinach is a regional train. Of course, there are also buses running but you can use trains, and here is an example for a (slow) connection with only two changes:

Travel Tips for Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Free Internet!

by Peterodl

If you head into the tourist info office just off the main square, the info office has one (1) internet terminal, free of charge, for public use.
There is a courtesy time limit on it's use as other people do want to use it but it's free.

THE OLD FORGE - ALTE SCHMIEDE

by LoriPori

In my opinion, the OLD FORGE or ALTE SCHMIEDE, is the most charming structure in Rothenburg, with its steep ornamental gable which graces this wonderful half-timbered building. I took many pics of it. One of my favourite is the one taken from up above on the walkway.
I tried to find out more about this structure and I was very frustrated with what I found - conflicting information. I have come to the conclusion that this present building was constructed in 1948 as it has a sign on it saying "1948 Georg Gerlach". If you take a close look at it, you can tell it is a newer building - just look at the garage and newer windows. But I do believe it was built on the site of the Old Smithy which was long ago destroyed. An ornate sign reads "1649" which I believe is the time of the Old Forge. Many implements surround the gardens and area of the structure.

Update: I was searching for "Old Forge" when I should have been searching for GERLACH'S FORGE or GERLACHSCHMIEDE

Great guild-signs all over Rothenburg

by globetrott

Guild-signs in general were added to a shop simply first of all, because most people could not read or write, so they had to search for the symbols and guild-signs, when they were looking for a certain shop.
This guildsign is the one of the old smithy that you may see, when walking on topof the medieval townwall between Spitalstor and Galgentor.
Each and every shop in Rothenburg, (including even Hamburger-shops with a big M) has these guild-signs and all of them are really nice and interesting

The "Schaefertanz-Kabinett"

by globetrott

This was in fact a really nice surprise for me inside the museum , high above St.Wolfgang church.
There is a large niche in one of the rooms and behind a glass-wall you may see this lovely scene of dancing dolls in traditional costumes with the scenery of Marktplatz in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
You may insert 1 Euro and these puppets will start to dance, according to the music from the opera "Die Regimentstochter" by Donizetti.
All of these puppets are made of bread-dough, made in Neustadt bei Coburg in 1930. A similar such scenery that was built for a doll-museum in Neustadt bei Coburg was lost some years ago, when museum-mice began to eat the precious works of art...

Just for a change

by Maryimelda about Adria's

Every now and then, I feel the need for a break from the local food. For instance, as much as I love pork in all its wonderful forms, I do need to have a night or two off it from time to time. Adria's is a little Italian Restaurant situated right at the Roedertor. The service was friendly and efficient and I was made to feel very welcome. I had a very nice Minestrone followed by a Spaghetti Napoletana with a green salad on the side. Washed down by a 1/4 litre of red with a total bill of 17.30 euro, I certainly had no complaints and the fact that I had only a few metres to go to my hotel made it even better for a tired traveller.
