Adorable hotel on market square

Hotel was adorable - location excellent - nice walled town.
Single room was very spacious. A bit tricky to find in my car.

A Historic Inn

This is a centrally located and family owned Inn just one block off the main square. Our room was large, clean, and moderately priced. We had a double, which in Germany means two twin beds pused together to form what Americans would call a King size bed. There was also a small sofa and arm chair. The bathroom was very small, but clean functional and totally adequate for our needs. A small restaurant was also located inside the hotel, but we never ate off the menu.

A typical German continental breakfast is included in the price. The food was very good, including pastries, cheese, cold cuts, juice, and yogurt. A perfect way to start the day - light but fulfilling.

Unique Quality: This place is literally a family run Inn. The young kids and dogs are all around, but never underfoot or loud. As a gay couple, I got the impression we were welcome but not necessarily embraced. That's OK. I don't expect everyone to love us. Just treat me with respect and give me equal treatment - we don't have to be best friends. The proprietors were often busy, so sometimes they were difficult to find if I had a question. But just waiting a few minutes and someone would pop in.

The building is hundreds of years old and very lovely inside. It's maintained meticulously. We were very happy here for two nights.

600-year-old B&B at old city centre

We had the smallest & cheapest room. It's clean, nice size for 2 people with everything except TV. You can ask for a room with TV and that may cost you 5 euro or more. Location is easy to find, just watch out "one way" streets. In fact there are a lot of guesthouse/B&B in the old town to choose from.

Unique Quality: Good staff and services, you can tour the house on your own, free parking facility back of their house. Breakfast was great! Fresh cheese, homemade jam, bread and yogurt and the bavarian decor dining room is very cozy.

Gasthof Goldener Greifen

I know the Gasthof restaurant was the home of the mighty Mayor Toppler, who died 1408 in the nearby dungeons of the Town Hall. There he welcomed emperors and kings and other important guests. We didn't try it (we were so full after street foods at the christmas market). Their price is pretty reasonable and we their breakfast was good.

Gasthof Greifen is Rothenburg done right

by TripAdvisor Member matt_tx00

Stayed here with a family member for two nights in early October 2005. We truly loved it here! As other reviews have said Gasthof Greifen is centrally located in Rothenburg just like 50 meters away from the town square. Everything there is to do in Rothenburg is within a 20-25 minute walk from the hotel. I wasn't sure if I would like Rothenburg at first being how touristy it is and all but of course I fell in love with it! There is something to be said for staying in a hotel where the building was originally built in the 1200s.

The room was "cute" (I can't think of another word), very homely, well kept. The best part was the huge "medieval" key chain that you got. The bathroom was nice. The traditional German breakfast was served every morning - it wasn't the best we had on our trip but it was just fine. Rothenburg was our "rest & relaxation" stop in Germany - the place we needed to do laundry. The hotel had a laundry facility on site and offered to do our laundry for us although we decided just to do the laundry ourselves and just relax and enjoy the beautiful courtyard out back.
The price for the hotel was just right at about 80 Euros a night.

Some advice: if you arrive in Rothenburg by car try to drive into town and park at the hotel itself. The hotel has a small parking lot out back and is about a mile from the nearest official parking lot for Rothenburg. You'll be hauling your bags a long way if you decide to park and walk it. Once your established at the hotel, just leave the car parked and do Rothenburg entirely by foot.

Also, try to spend two nights in Rothenburg. Rothenburg has an "added quality" at night. It gives you a chance to slow down from the hectic pace of your travels. You can see everything here in two nights and one full day.

Excellent hotel

by TripAdvisor Member CuriousKaren

The Gasthof Greifen is just wonderful! We regret only staying one night in this excellent hotel. We parked at the back of the hotel and walked all around the town before returning for dinner in the hotel restaurant. Excellent meal and reasonably priced. Our room was enormous compared to those we had stayed in at other German hotels. We had a king-size bed, with an additional attached room where a single bed, lounge, TV and small dining table were located. The bathroom was small but very modern and clean. For a 700 year old hotel I was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend this hotel, not only for its great rooms, excellent restaurant, ample breakfast and friendly staff but also because of its location. It is only a few steps to the town's central square. Rothenburg is a magical place and the Gasthof Griefen only added to the charming time we had in Rothenburg.

We loved Gasthof Greifen!

by TripAdvisor Member pruegg

When we arrived, our room was ready and the lady at the front desk walked us to our room. It was very cozy and cute! Very good room for the money! The hotel is in the perfect location right on the main square and lots of shopping nearby. They have dinner available which was very reasonable. They will also let you buy a bottle of wine for next to nothing! Breakfast is included which is standard European fare (bread, lunchmeat, cheese, yogurt, cereal). The people are very friendly and couldn't have been more accomodating. If you do visit Rothenburg (which I highly recommend)stay overnight instead of as a day trip. There is a nightwatchman tour at 8pm that is really good! The city was one of our favorite on our trip to Europe.

Good Value, Nice Atmosphere

by TripAdvisor Member Trikist

We spent 2 nights at the Gasthof zum Greifen. It is right off the main square, about 15 min for a slow walker from the train station (follow the signs for the Altstadt). The gasthof has a middle ages origin and tries to maintain that atmosphere. The staff is friendly and the food is good. All of this is for a good price.

Regards, Gary

Nice, family operated hotel

by TripAdvisor Member ruppbenn_traveling

This is a very nice family operated hotel. The staff are friendly; the rooms are well maintained; and the location is ideal. We have stayed in other places in Rothenburg, but we decided to try this hotel because of the reviews we read on this site. We were pleased with our experience and we will visit Gasthof Greifen again.

Excellent Place to Stay

by TripAdvisor Member Phi450

The Gasthof Greifen was a great place to stay. It was located right by the square. The staff was excellent and the food was great. We loved the breakfast in the mornings. It is definitely a cut above continental breakfast. The hotel is full of character and charm. Of all the places we stayed at in Europe, this was certainly our favorite.
