Methods of transportation

by 3000ld

Is it possible to fly from the United States to Rothenburg? If not, which city in Germany is better for arrival and departure to the US? I do not want to rent a car while in Germany. Is it possible to take a train from Frankfurt or Nuremberg to Rothenburg? I appreciate any advice offered.

Closest Airport is Nuremberg (NUE), but there are no intercontinental flights to Nuremberg.

Next close is Stuttgart Airport (STR). Delta Airlines flies from Atlanta to Stuttgart.

But the best train connection - as it was already said before - is from Frankfurt Airport (FRA).

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: FRA Airport
From: MUC Airport
From: STR Airport
From: NUE Airport
To: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The cheapest connection is from Munich Airport (MUC) if you use the Bavaria Ticket for this trip. The Bavaria Ticket is valid one day for all local public transport in the state Bavaria. The mini group version for 2-5 persons is EUR 25,00. On weekdays it is however only valid past 9am. To find appopriate connections select at the DB timetable as means of transport "only local transport". The limitation to local trains is of no big disadvantage on this route. Travel time will be 4-5 hours.

Rothenburg, Nuremberg and Munich are all in Bavaria.
Rothenburg even in the public transport network of the Greater Nuremberg region VGN.

Between Rothenburg and Nuremberg you can use a TagesTicket Plus (EUR 13,70). This is a day ticket covers (like the Bavaria Ticket) all local public transport, i.e. the for 1-6 persons, but only 2 of them must be older than 18 years. Such a tickettrip from any train/U-Bahn/tram/bus stop in Nuremberg to any train/bus stop in Rothenburg.

sorry - a double mouse click garbled the last 2 sentences.

Travel Tips for Rothenburg ob der Tauber

RATHAUS - TOWN HALL

by LoriPori

On the west side of Marktplatz is the Renaissance RATHAUS or TOWN HALL ( circa 1572 - 1578 ). On Herrngasse is the rear Gothic part of the Rathaus which dates from 1250. This white building served as the Seat of Government for the city-state during the Medieval Ages and for Rothenburg, since the formation of the Federalist Government.
The Gothic part includes the Imperial Hall and the 50 meter ( 165 feet ) high tower (Rathausturm) from which you have great views of the town.
The Renaissance part includes a large stoned portico (Circa 1681) opening onto the square.

The history of Rothenburg dates back to 970

by globetrott

The history of Rothenburg dates back to the year 970 when a noble man named Reiniger built a small castle high above the small river Tauber.
In 1108 the last earl of Rothenburg died without children and all of his posessions were given as a donation to the monastery Comburg.
In 1172 Rothenburg gets the rights of a town and the inner circle of the townwall was built. From that inner wall you may still see today :
Weisser Turm, Markusturm and Roederbogen.

The 1000 year old Church of St. Peter and St. Paul

by wabIV

This charming church located just down the hill from Rothenburg ob der Tauber is nestled in the quaint village of Detwang. This architectual gem was founded in 968 and is home to a beautiful alterpiece made in 1508 by famous Wurzburg Master wood carver Tilman Riemenschneider.

Chinese food in Rothenburg?

by Chawlass about Lotus Chinese Restaurant

Special interior close to Town Square (Rathaus). Waiter (owner?) very attentive. Food was very well prepared and presented. The spring rolls almost looked like an apple strudel, but were the best spring rolls I've ever had.

Night Watchman's Tour

by Johnscarroll

This is a great tour about life in Medieval Rothenburg. He mentions the highs and lows of life during the time. Pointing out the fine points of local architecture opens your eyes to everything your are seeing. It all has a purpose. The groups are basically of unlimited size, so that can be overwhelming when you are surrounded by 100 other people walking down the narrow streets. But he handles the groups with aplomb and a great sense of humor.

He trusts you to pay at the end of the tour. Don't be an ass like some I saw, skulking away without paying. Give the man his due.
