Best hotel off the beaten path
Over the past 20+ years, I've stayed at this hotel in Rothenburg with various family members and it's a wonderful, quiet, and historic place to stay without having to worry about the crowds. It's a fairly short walk to the city center but both small enough to avoid being the target of a one or more tour bus loads of people and far enough off the main street to be relaxing and away from the noise too. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and decorated with period furnishings. The breakfast in the morning is more than enough to satisfy the American palate. Most importantly, the staff is courteous and helpful. You really can't go wrong staying here.
Another word of advice if you're seeing Rothenburg for the first time---don't stay just one night! There are a number of fabulous restaurants inside the city walls, and you have to explore around the outside in the valley as well. Take your time and explore every little nook and cranny in a leisurely fashion, have some wine/beer in the afternoon while people-watching, and enjoy the lack of crowds in the morning and evenings before/after the tour buses depart. Rothenburg is one of those restful stops that deserves to some time. Don't rush through it.
Unique Quality: Quiet location a really easy walk from the city center. Small number of rooms (uncrowded) that are relatively spacious and comfortable. Excellent breakfasts to get you started on your day.

Little-known hotel in Rothenburg
For nearly 20 years, I and now my family have been visiting Germany and every visit to Rothenburg involves staying at this wonderful hidden hotel on Paradeisgasse, not very far from the town square. Even so close to the center, it's on a very quiet street and offers courtyard parking for guests, a great breakfast buffet, and spacious comfortable rooms. One drawback however is the climb up steep stairways, especially to the top rooms, but this is the way these houses were built. There was almost always someone (in traditional clothing) attending the hotel, and the service was excellent at all times.
This is a little more expensive than some of the other hotels, but the small number of rooms makes the service all that more personal for ou. Highly recommended!
