trying to decide whether to go to: GASTHOF BUTZ, Hotel Bayerischer Hof , or Gasthof Zum Ochsen...All have availability; comfort, quiet and good breakfasts would help; going by train and walking around town. any recommendations?
I've stayed a couple nights at Zum Ochsen, good price, inside the walls so within 5 minutes to the square. I do remember the food at thier restaurant was not the best (at dinner), breakfast was average/good.
The other B&B we found with good price, central, good food, was Zum Breiterlie- one of the only smoke free places we found in Rothenburg.
I did a tip on in in our Germany lodging page.
good luck

I did not put HOTEL EISENHUT in the Accommodations area as we did not stay here. But the building itself is worth mentioning,
Hotel Eisenhut, located on Hermgasse 3-5 is one of four Patrician houses. The most wealthy and powerful families of Rothenburg used to live in these lovely houses back in the 15th to 18th century.
Today it is a Hotel (transformed in 1924) offering 78 rooms. It is filled with antiques and original artworks.
This is a nice local custom of the area that I saw at eastertime: All of the fountains in Rothenburg were decorated at easter time with long girlandes of colored eggs forming a crown on top of the fountain.
This is the fountain in Roederstrasse, close to Markusturm and I saw also plenty of more fountains decorated that way !
In the very south of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, far behind Siebers-Turm (the tower you may see on most of the postcards from Ploelein) you may walk towards Spitalsbastei and will pass by Spitalskirche and the quite big hospital of Rothenburg.
You may walk inside the innercourt and will see some interesting old building next to the townwall.
Sk. Jakob kirche is the most important church in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and is one best preserved original Gothic churches in the region. Construction on the church started in the year 1311, and continued until 1474. Because the church was spared the ravages of fire and other forms of destruction over the centuries, it is for the most part original as opposed to a restoration.
Although the church features fascinating classic Gothic architecture and masterfully crafted stained glass windows, it is best noted for the carved wooden altars, panels, and motifs, that adorn the chapels. Bavaria is well known for it's woodcarvings, and the carvings in this church are some of Bavaria's most treasured. Photo #1 shows part of the Heiligblut altar ( holy blood altar ) carved by Tilman Riemenschneider in about 1505. This altar is located in Heiligenblut-kapelle ( chapel ), which occupies the rear part of the churh behind the organ pipes. Photo #2 shows a carved podium, a great regal chandelier, and some of the interior arches. The wooden main altar was carved by Friedrich Herlin in 1466. A wood carving known as the nativity boat features Mary, Joseph, and the Christ child, being drawn by native African people in a great canoe. This enormous and fascinating wood sculpture, was carved out of a single tree trunk. It was donated by a sister church in Tanzania
Photo #3 shows part of the church exterior. The Gothic arched stained glass windows are artistic masterpieces. Even the great arched wooden entranceways such as the one shown, are intricately carved. This enormous church dominates old town.
This now Protestant church is open to the public daily except during worship services. Photography is allowed. The recommended donation for visiting the church is 1,5 euros for adults and 0,5 euros for students.
