Places to Sleep in Rothenburg-- on a budget!

Hi all,

I'm planning to stay in Rothenberg with my boyfriend for 2 nights (May 28, 29), and I was hoping someone could recommend a place for us to stay that is not too expensive. Also, we are backpacking and will arrive by train to Rothenburg-- any suggestions on what location would be best? Thanks for your help!

We stayed at Kruzenhof about a 5 min walk into Rotehburg - family run pension. Fantastic brekfast quiet room even down to chocs on pillow. Romantic little place - definitely recommend. Have fun

Accommodation in Rothenburg is mostly expensive, especially the hotels and if the accommodation is within the walled city or not. Its Ok to stay outside the wall. There are a number of 'Private Zimmer' you could look at by googling the tourism site or try this one: http://www.haus-karin.de/engl.htm or: http://www.haus-weiss.de/cms/index.php?lang=en There are also Guest Houses- try:http://www.hofmann.rothenburg.de/535715977d0cd1401/index.html

Expect to pay about 45 euros for a double per night.

I don't know of any Backpacker establishments there.

I have stayed twice at the Gasthaus Uhl. It is a 9-room guest house atop a bakery and restaurant. The staff is very friendly (family-run) and it's centrally located. The tropical decor inside one of the rooms on the top floor is a bit odd, but the price is right (something like 59 euro for a 2-bed room in summer of '06).

I believe there are cheaper accommodations outside the wall, but spend the extra couple of euros for the prime location.

If possible, take the Night Watchman Tour. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions on Rothenburg or things to do there. It is my favorite small town in the world, and I'm going back for the Christmas Market this year.

Goldenen Rose, www.zur-goldenen-rose.de is within the walls and is a good small Hotel in a quieter location, 25 beds and has a very good restaurant. If you need a modern feel to your hotel, this is not for you, as well as many other hotels in Rothenburg for that mater. It is clean and well maintained but some rooms are not modern with toilets, for example. But, still it is my favorite. It gives one a feel of older days. It is not far from the train station too. A better value won't be found I don't think.

Travel Tips for Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The town fortifications - Truly unique

One of the best things about Rothenberg is the fortification surrounding the city and the ability for you to be able to walk in them! Many other towns will have fortifications but they are in nearly all cases not open to the public. However in Rothenberg many original walls and towers are totally accessible for the public to explore, which gives an experience like no other. The walls also offer some fantastic views both of the the town itself and the scenery outside the town.

THE PLONLEIN - LITTLE SQUARE

The most photographed Iconic Image of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the PLONLEIN or LITTLE SQUARE. From the Market Square you go to Schmiedgasse and at the southern end of Schmiedgasse (Smithy Lane) you will see a scenic fork in the road with the Siebers Tower or Siebersturm (circa 1385) on the left, the Kobolzeller Tower (circa 1360) on the right and the star attraction, the little crooked narrow half-timbered pointed house (Spitzhauschen).
The Kobolzeller Gate leads to a steep road to the Tauber Valley and the famous Double Bridge.
Of course, I took many many pictures of this picturesque little corner. It is pretty isn't it!

Have a snowball

One specialty of Rothenburg can be found in the bakeries and caf?s: the "Schneeball" (snowball). This ball is not necessarily made of snow it rather is a ball of dry dough wrapped to ball like a ball of yarn. Then it is dipped in either icing powder or chocolate. Very delicious.

Price: ?1.20 - ?3.50 (depends on the dip)

I bought one snowball with icing powder and coffee to go. On a bench in a park I made a little picnic and after the snowball was in my stomach I noticed that the icing powder was on my black jeans. Do not make the same mistake! Alternative: don't wear pants! :-D

The chapel of St. Blasius close to Burgtor

The chapel of St. Blasius is a small church outside of the "Burgtor" at the est-end of Rothenburg.
Inside that church you may see some great remains of romanic frescoes.
This building was built as a part of the old palace in 1142. It was partly destroyed by an earth-quake in 1356 and became a church in the year 1400.
Today it is a place to remember the victims of both Worldwars.
You may enter St.Blasius chapel freely and without restrictions during the day.

A lovely facade and great food

I mainly was attracted by the unique fassade of the building, but this place is also a great traditional restaurant and "Konditorei" with delicious homemade cakes and icecream ! Why not trying some local food:
Schweinsbraten mit Knödel und Krautsalat
(roasted pork with dumplings and white cabbage-salad.)
In general you may find 2 different kinds of dumplings that are served with meat :
Kartoffelknödel - made of potatoes
Semmelknödel - made of rolls and white bread (my favorites!!)
