I have travelled there by bus. I guess it's still there.

If you have more luggage with you than you can easily carry from one train to another than you have to much luggage with you. I'd solve that problem first.
Nürnberg - Rothenburg ob der Tauber (make sure you enter the correct Rothenburg in the DB online trip planner as there are several) usally involves two changes, but as they are in small station they should not be problematic.
There might be tour buses that go to Rothenburg from Nürnberg, but there is no regular service. Buses that compete with train services are virtual nonexistent in Germany.

DB timetable
From: N
To: Rothenburg ob der Tauber Bahnhof

There are connections with only 1 change in Steinach. That's a tiny station where the branch line to Rothenburg starts.
There are no direct public buses. The DB timetable would show you also these.
Single ticket local public transport is EUR 8,40. This covers the regional trains between Nuremberg and Rothenburg, the buses in Rothenburg and the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses in Nuremberg.

Travel Tips for Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Market Place

by Knoto

This picture shows the wonderful market place with the Town Hall.
The gotic part with the Tower was built around 1250-1400.The other part from 1572-1578.You can climb up the Tower for a little entrance fee.3 euros I think.

Sit down, close your eyes and think some centurys`s cool...:-)) The wonderful rebuildet Town!

by LoriPori

Walking south on Schmiedgasse, you come to the famous fork in the road and the Little Square, the Plonlein. To the left of the Plonlein, is the SIEBERS TOWER or Siebersturm (circa 1385). This tower and gate served as an entrance to Rothenburg for about 150 years until the building of Spital Bastion in the 16th century. Now, when passing through it, the street changes to Spitalgasse (Hospital Way), the southern entrance to the Old Town.

Rothenburg's famous legend

by islaazul

The story goes that in 1631, during the Thirty Years War, Rothenburg, was about to be overrun by a Catholic army. Just before the carnage was to begin, the Catholic general offered a deal. If anyone could drink a three-liter jug of wine in one gulp, the town would be spared.

Rothenburg's mayor grabbed the jug, chugged the wine in one gulp, and slept for three days while the town rejoiced. This Meistertrunk moment is immortalized in the clock on the Councilors' Tavern on the Marktplatz. Several times a day, crowds gather to watch the clock's figures reenact Mayor Nusch's sacrificial gulp for his people.

St. Blasius chapel from inside

by globetrott

Don't skip St. Blasius chapel, when you are interested in romanic churches. Get inside this lovely church and take a closer look for the remains of the beautiful frescos !
What a pity this building was mis-used a long time as a lapidary-museum at the beginning of the 20th century.
The park around the chapel is also a great place to relax a bit from touristy Rothenburg. Ordinary tourists are obviously totally skipping this place !

by chuying about Selling everywhere

you can find schneeball from speciality stores or any bakeries. It's about 1-2 euro a piece and it's like a fist size. Taste pretty good, i like it better than N/A doughnut, less sweet. It's a good snack.
