Train route from Frankfurt to Rothenburg

by lizetvd

What is the easiest and shortest train route from Frankfurt to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and again from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Paris? Do I need to make reservations for any of these train trips?

Thank you!

Look at the excellent

http://www.bahn.com/i/view/overseas/en/index.shtml

for train times, details and fares in English.

You do not have to work out the best route: the site does it for you.

You do not need to book tickets in advance for Frankfurt>Rotheburg ob, but it may be worth doing so as you can get a cheaper fare this way (not much cheaper on this route, as it happens).

Bahn.de will send you an eticket, which you print out and present to the guard with the card you used to purchase it. Taking the same card is absolutely essential.

Rothenburg to Paris is a long journey (8+ hours) involving several changes You would do better to break it somewhere such as Frankfurt or Wuerzburg, and then travel onwards. Bahn.de is unable to give a ticket price for this whole journey (too many changes, I think) so I suggest you look at the details for each departure (click the grey arrow to the left) then buy tickets in advance for the longer segments if possible.

I would certainly want to make reservations for the faster trains to Paris from wherever you join them.

You can find timetabled here: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

You don't need to make reservations, but you may get a savings fare (train bound) from EUR 19 if you book well in advance.

There are "Europa Spezial" fares available from Frankfurt to Paris, and BTW this trip takes less than 4 hours if you choose the fastest connection without any change. Fare from 39 Euro. (Rothenburg to Frankfurt is 3 hours and 2 changes. Fare from 19 Euro if you book separately.) But also fares from 39 Euro from Rothenburg to Paris.

You find these special fares here:

http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/prices/europe/europa-spezial.shtml

These low fares apply only if you book well ahead.

If you click on the "Book online" button you will see the connections and fares.

DB timetable

From: FRA
From: Frankfurt
To: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

> Do I need to make reservations for any of these train trips?
Only for the Thalys or ICE trains to Paris. You can (but not must) reserve also from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) or Frankfurt to Würzburg. With regional trains (e.g. Würzburg to Rothenburg) you cannot reserve.

Public Facilities

by Maryimelda

If you are in need of a toilet as you walk around Rothenburg, you will find one at just about all of the gates in and out of the city. I won't say for certain whether or not there is a charge, but my cloudy old memory is telling me that there isn't. Don't quote me on this.

HOTEL-ROMANTIK MARKUSTURM

by LoriPori

As we did not stay here, I am placing this tip in General. But I do want to promote the lovely 3 Star HOTEL-ROMANTIK MARKUSTURM because of its excellent location in the town center. The building was a former Customs House dating back to 1264 that was converted into a Hotel. It is located on Rodergasse 1, near the Markusturm Tower and a short walk to Marktplatz.
Reviews on Trip Advisor are very good.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a "Freie Reichsstadt"

by globetrott

In 1250 the city of Rothenburg starts to build the gothic townhall - (the part with the observation-tower and the white facade)
In 1274 Rothenburg ob der Tauber becomes "freie Reichsstadt" - a status grating certain rights by the king. This is why the museum of the town is still called "Reichsstadtmuseum"
In 1311 they start to build St.Jakob-church , that will not be finished untill 1485.
In 1356 an earthquake destroyes a big part of Rothenburg On my picture : The path on top of the medieval townwall and the parking on Schrannenplatz.

Take your truck (and a map) and make a trip through the truly romantic surroundings of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, you might end up in Bad Windsheim's awesome "Fraenkisches Freilandmuseum".

Rothenburg Restaurant and Beer Garden List

At this link:

Romantic Road Restaurants
is a full list and short description of most Rothenburg restaurants and beer gardens in the old city.

This web site also has good maps and other info on the city and the whole Romantic Road highlights.

Another good website with lots of recommendations is Rothenburg's site:
Rothenburg One of my favorite places is a nice beer garden (Reichs-Kuchenmeister) behind St. Jacobs church.
One of the few in Rothenburg that stays open late with excellent beer, schnaaps, wine and food.
