Schwangau

"Hohenschwangau"

So not to be confused (as I previously was) the village of Hohenschwangau is in the municipality of Schwangau where the Schloss Hohenshwangau is.

Trivia: Schwangau means "swan country"; Hohenshwangau means "High country of the swan". Our guide told us so.

May 27, 2010, my third day in Munich I joined the Neuschwanstein Castle tour from Radius Tours (a popular tour agent with office inside the Munich Hauptbahnhof station). I figured I don't want to bother myself going on my own. Our guide Mike was a bit comic in a good-natured way, making the 2-hour or so trip from Munich by train/bus combination pleasant. He made sure that the group is intact and no one's missing and everyone gets in the same train or bus, giving info, tips, cautions every now and then walking back and forth inside the train.

"Neuschwanstein Castle"

The tour costs EUR35, I could go on my own saving maybe 10EUR but it's my last day in Munich and flying to Prague the next day. So I want to take it easy.

I forgot how many transport change was there during the trip, I think 2 trains and a bus going and 1 bus ride and 1 train coming back. I totally forgot.

Upon arriving at the bus stop in the municipality of Schwangau, we rested for awhile taking some snacks while our tour guide is buying our entry tickets for the Neuschwanstein castle. The entry is by batch and we have to wait for our batch number to appear on the electronic display at the entrance of the castle. Before reaching the entrance by the way, we passed by some other sights as we arrived noontime and our entry is at 2:10pm. So we passed by the Hohenschwangau Castle - we did not went up the hill to the castle - I did alone and already on top when I've noticed my group is down below.

We also passed by the beautiful swan lake before finally starting the exhausting 15-minute or so or half an hour I dunno - walk up the hill to the castle. I was with the welsh couple whom I've traveled with to Rothenburg the previous day. The lady was pregnant so she had to be a bit cautious. I was sweating when we reached the top and it's a bit of a cold weather.

"Coming down"

The inside of the castle is stunning (as well as the castle itself), the wall paintings, the ornaments, the articles. There was a guide inside who narrates the stories of each room. King Ludwig II spent most of his fortune on this castle, so the story goes. It's a work of art, and the location is just amazing - on top of the hill overlooking the whole town.

We walked up further uphill and there was a great view of the yellow Hohenschwangau Castle and the village below. Further up there is a bridge - the Marian Bridge - which is visible from the Neuschwanstein Castle and we also walked up there where you can have a magnificent view of the castle and the gorge with the waterfalls below. Simply beautiful!

Going down is walking through a scenic route along a waterfalls and gorge. We went back to Munich late in the afternoon after 4pm.

A Beautifull place for hiking!
Go up with the Tegelbergbahn..and walk around!!

Schwangau is located in Bavaria (Bayern), southern germany, close to the austrian border.

Steeply rising mountains, limpid lakes and romantic castles are the most famous landmarks of Schwangau.

The holiday opportunities and facilities are unequalled

"By a great castle"
