transportation from Frankfurt to Würzburg and scenic roads to Prague

by jezzabel

Hi,
We are flying to Frankfurt on the 5th of september. Our flight arrives at the airport at 21:40, and then we need to travel to Würzburg. I've checked on diebahn.de and have found that the latest trains to Würzburg leave at aprox. 22:00. We won't make it on time to the train since we have to pick up our luggage first. (There's a train leaving at 23.00 but that trip takes 6 hours vs 2 hours for the other trains)
I've been trying to find a webpage with bus schedules from Frankfurt to Würzburg but haven't been lucky. Does anybody know how to get to Würzburg from Frankfurt that late in the evening?
Also, after our stay in Würzburg we'll rent a car and drive to Prague. Can anybody suggest a route with the most scenic roads? and, do you think the Neuschwanstein castle would be on the way?

Many thanks for your help!

Long distance buses are virtually non existant in Germany so train it is. I had a look at the German Rail website and it appears there are no trains for that route until early morning, from 0530 there are frquent trains mostly direct taking about 1 hr 26 mins. As they all appear to go via the central Frankfurt railway station I would stay in a Hotel in the city and catch a train the next day. You sometimes wait a long time at Frankfurt to collect luggage and exit immigration, so if it was up to me I would book a Hotel and catch the train the following day when you are rested.

Why don't you rent the car in Frankfurt airport and drive to Würzburg. In the evening you will get there very fast (normally this route is a guarantee for traffic jams!).

When you rent your car make sure you can bring it into Czech Republic. And also make sure you don't drive around Prague as this can be a nightmare. Park it somewhere safe and leave it.

And no, unfortunately Neuschwanstein Castle is not on the way. It would be a detour of at least 1 day to go there on the way from Würzburg to Prague.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your tips :)
We're going to stay for 5 days in Würzburg for a conference, so we won't have much time to drive around until the conference is over (then we'll go on real holidays to Prague). That's why we prefered to rent the car in Würzburg on our last day there. So in the end I'm afraid we'll have to stay over night in Frankfurt the night we're arriving in Germany.
I didn't know about traffic in Prague, thanks for the warning!
That's a pity the Neuschwanstein castle won't be on our way. We may still try to delay the trip and get the time to go and see it. It looks beautiful on the photos :)
Thanx both for your help!

wurzburg is not that big of a place.your rental car options there may be few. might look into renting car in a much larger town even if you have to take a train from wurzburg to the larger town.

Travel Tips for Würzburg

City of Churches

by zrim

Würzburg was ruled by the iron-fisted Prince-Bishops. These guys may have been tough, but they were also bishops, therefore, they demanded ample houses of worship. I found the cathedral and the other churches to be amazing places: from the far flung vaulted ceilings in the cathedral, to the baroque design of the Neumunster Church, to the creepy relics housed in subterranean recesses, to the delightful Marienkirche within the castle walls. Go see them all.

Escherndorf is one of the lovely villages on the River Main, surrounded by vineyards. They make great wine there, the most famous ones are called 'Escherndorfer Lump' and 'Escherndorfer Fürstenberg'. Try them!

Kappele

by zrim

High on the hillside the pretty Rococo Kappele watches over Würzburg. The traveler must make a kind of pilgrimage to see the church. A path extends up the hillside past 14 small chapels. Apparently there have been several renditions of churches on this spot, but the present incarnation owes its appearance to the famous architect Balthasar Neumann (the guy who is responsible for the gaudy Residenz across the river.)

The Residenz

by Leipzig

Built 1720 -1744 according to plans of Balthasar Neumann as Prince bishops' palace. It contains over 300 Baroque and Rococo rooms and a gigantic staircase spanned by a curved vault that was the largest of its time.
