South African sports nut

by Rustynails

Hi All

Im new in the area, and will be attending University here for two months. As you might have read im from Cape Town South Africa. I am really missing the usual selection of sports that i watch back in South Africa (incl Rugby, Cricket and Formula 1) - so i was wondering if there might be any pubs etc that might show these kinds of things (I know its quite popular in Munich-but does'nt appear to be over here) Alternatively, are there any folk out there who would let a poor home sick student stand in their garden and watch through the window, for 2 hours every weekend:)

Anyway, really enjoying Würzburg so far

Regards

Russell

Russell, you are in for a big suprise there in Germany, you are going to miss all the lovely sports from South Africa etc... The Germans are only going to teach you how to drink lots of beer, best you come back home to Cape Town.

^_^.

i just arrived, but when I get into a house I will be more than willing to have you over to watch any sports I get.

Also, I am looking for someone to go to some football matches if you are interested, of course beer before and after would be a good idea!!

Travel Tips for Würzburg

Residenz Palace – The Residenz...

by Slydevil

Residenz Palace – The Residenz Palace is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, considered to be Germany's best example of Baroque architecture and one of the most ornate palaces in all of Europe. Built in the mid 18th century, among the many beautiful things in this massive palace are the hall of mirrors (echoes of Versailles!) and the frescoes by the great Venetian baroque artist, Giovanni Tiepolo, including the world's largest ceiling painting

Würzburg is the starting point...

by Mandy23

Würzburg is the starting point of the Romantic Road, the most famous German tourist route. From April to October there is a daily coach service between Würzburg and Füssen linking all cities and villages on the Romantic Road.

Taste the local beer

by olli_tr

Local brewery, Würzburger Hofbräu, makes some excellent beers. I consider their unfiltrated wheat beer (Hefe Weissbier) the best I have tasted. It's one of the things that makes me return to this city, whenever I'm anywhere near... Just hop into a bar and ask for one "hefe" and you'll get one ("Ein Hefe, bitte" is all the German you need).

Würzburger Hofbräu also arranges tours in to the brewery itself, so you might check them as well, if you're into beer.

Sight-seeing in Würzburg

by laughing_lioness

Würzburg is not that big so you can easily visit the sights in a day or during a weekend.

I'd definitely suggest to visit:

Residenz (join a tour guide!)
Festung Marienberg (the castle on top of the hill)
the cathedral
Alte Mainbrücke (old bridge cross the river Main)
Alte Universität (old university)

Schloss Marienberg

by zrim

Can't miss the imposing fortress from anywhere in the city. It is well worthwhile taking the winding hike up the hill to see the castle. On the way up the hiker is rewarded with stunning views of Würzburg. Once inside the castle gates there are several musueums, plus the castle's keep and the charming Marienkirche.
