romantic road: train or bus?

by elejeune

Should we take the bus or the train to go to Fuessen from Wuerzburg? We have eurail passes. We do not have time to stop overnight along the Romantic road. Will we miss a lot if we take the train instead of the bus? If we take the train we can stop in Rothenburg for a couple of hours and it takes less time.
Thank you

RE: romantic road: train or bus?

The Romantic Road bus stops only 30 min. in Rothenburg. Thus if you want to see Rothenburg you have to stay either over night or use the train. Here you have at least the chance of a longer stay in Rothenburg (i.e. it's up to you).

train: covered by your Eurail pass but you need a pass day for this
bus: 60% discount for Eurail pass holders, but no pass day required

The Romantic Road is a road connecting romantic towns. It is not really a romantic drive! Esp. not by bus. Only if you do it by bicycle (in one week).

Travel Tips for Würzburg

Climb the hill to see Marienberg Castle

by zrim

The old fortress guarding Würzburg is in excellant repair and worth an afternoon's visit. For those with tired legs, the castle is accessible by auto or bus. However, I found the walk up the hill through the vineyards past the old stone statues to be half the fun.

Dragon!

by leics

I spotted him on Karmelitanstrasse, attached to the old Carmelite monastery building.

I don't know why he's there, or why he's upside down, or why he's got his....erm...paws? over his eyes.

Felt quite sorry for him, actually!

Vineyards

by Cristian_Uluru about Wine taste

Wurzburg is famous for its wines. When you arrive here by car the first thing that you can notice are the vineyards on the hills. This region has got many wine cellars where you can stop to taste it.

St.Burkard

by Cristian_Uluru

St.Burkard is situated to the feet of Marienberg. It was settled by Benedectine in 748 in a Romanesque style and it was restored in the 15th century modifying many parts of the structure in Gothic style. Inside the church you can see the Lady made by Tilman Riemenschneider in 1500 and the Crucifixion made bt the Riemenschneider's school.

Residenz

by Nemorino

The Residence of the Würzburg Prince-Bishops was built from 1720-1744. It is now on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list.

Guided tours in English are conducted daily at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Admission is EUR 4.50 regular or EUR 3.50 reduced. No photography is allowed inside the residence.

In the foreground of the photo there is a statue which I would be glad to explain to you if I could figure it out. To me it looks like a satyr fighting with a cherub, in fact the cherub seems dangerously close to gouging the satyr's eye out. Or maybe they are just playing, I don't know.

Perhaps it is a scene from Greek or Roman mythology that any educated person would have recognized two or three generations ago. As my high school Latin teacher used to say, with an endearing sneer: "That was a classical reference. You wouldn't get it."
