We stayed two nights, hat good rooms, great breakfast and service and paid only EUR 48,-- for a single room per night.
That's what you find at the Walfisch.
A family business since 1919, the house has a high reputation well beyond Franconia.
The hotel is situated in the heart of the city directly on the river Main.
From here you have a splendid view of the river, the Fortress Marienberg and the pilgrimage chapel "Käppele".
The Walfisch is not only a high-class hotel , but also a restaurant which tickles your tastebuds. The menu ranges from the hearty Franconian to the classically international kitchen.
We made a mess of finding this hotel. We should have exited the train station, walked to the first main road, crossed it, gone left, walked past a sort of roundabout called Berliner Platz and turned right onto Ludwigstrasse. It is around 10 minutes walk from the station.
The reception was quite busy both when we checked in and out. Staff were pleasant and friendly.
Our room was very clean and comfortable. It had a safe, a minibar that you could use as a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. The bed was very comfortable. The air-con in the room worked well. The room was very quiet at night.
The hotel had an indoor swimming pool, which although small was really lovely for a quick, relaxing dip. It also had a sauna, which I did not use.
This hotel is conveniently located for sights and for the main train station. I would love to stay here again for longer.

Wurzburg is the only place that I had room
reservation. I stayed in a bed and breakfast. I found the place through a bed and breakfast agency (www.bed-and-breakfast.de).
About 60 DM/day with breakfast.
If you have never been in Germany, being in a bed and breakfast gives a introduction like no book will offer. Very friendly.
I stayed in the Wurzburg Youth Hostel, located underneath the Festung Marienburg. It's a fair distance from the train station, but only 5 minutes from the Alte Mainbruke. Friendly and clean, I'd stay here again if I was in Wurzburg sometime in the near future.
33DM or 15USD a night, including showers, b-fast, and lockers. You can't beat that with a stick!
Nice location with a nice terrace providing great views of the Festung up on the hill of Wurzburg. The rooms are superbly clean and there are free lockers for each guest. Breakfast is good and included, so have at it!
Friendly staff, clean and comfortable rooms at a reasonable price. The restaurant attached to the hotel provides good food although a little on the expensive side. Of course, with no other restaurants around they could get away with it.
Sorry to reply so late, now June and you've probably been to Wurzburg already. But for anyone searching for a place to stay in Wurzburg, I've stayed at Spehnkuch a few times and always enjoyed it. The owner's a very friendly man who laughed at my poor German. Yes, recommend it. There's parking nearby, across the Friedensbrucke (bridge) which is just a few mins walk west of the hotel (see Google maps of Wurtzburg). That's where we left our car - if you were to leave the hotel, continue along Röntgenring (main road), cross the bridge, parking is down and on the right (you'll see it).
Hotel Spenkuch, Röntgenring 7, 97070 Würzburg, Germany - 0931 54752
I stayed in Wurzburg only one night in a guesthouse, this is the view I saw in the morning from my room window.
