Travel Tips for Würzburg

Marienkapelle

by Mandy23

Marienkapelle is a late Gothic chapel completed about 1481 and was our next stop while strolling through the town. It's located at the market place. It has rich ornamental sculptures, tombstones of Franconian knights and townsmen ...

Lusamgaertchen

by globetrott

Lusamgaertchen is the name of some remains of a cloister dating back to the year 1180 and there you will find the tomb of Walther von der Vogelweide, a well-known singer of medieval times, who used to travel from one royal palace to the other and sing for the royalties of that time.
Some of the old arches still show ornate decorations and sculptured reliefs, it would be a pity to miss it !
The entrance to Lusamgaertchen is from Martinstrasse next to the Neumuenster.
No entrance-fee and no restrictions, just go there and enjoy !

Best view and nice food!

by laughing_lioness about Nikolaushof

The Nikolaushof is on top of the hill overlooking the river Main and Würzburg so you will have a great view if you make sure to book a table that is not too far in the backyard.

The Nikolaushof has several restaurants - the Seegarten being the more expensive one.

For everyone coming for a visit in summer I definitely suggest the Biergarten. There they serve reasonably priced beergarden dishes.

Attention: Closed on Mondays and all January!!!!

Hofkirche der Residenz

by globetrott

Hofkirche is without doubt one of the most beautiful churches in Germany ! It was constructed after the plans of Balthasar Neumann and the interior was built by Lucas von Hildebrandt with paintings by Giovanni Nattista Tiepolo, frescos by Rudolf Byss and the great pulpit by Materno Bossi. Hofkirche was destroyed in WW II but completly restored already shortly afterwards.
You can enter this great church freely and without restrictions dring the day, photography is no problem !
Hofkirche is open daily
From April till October : 09.00a.m. - 06.00p.m.
and November till March : 10.00a.m. - 04.30p.m.

St. Kilian Cathedral (Dom St. Kilian)

by Ewingjr98

St. Kilian Cathedral is the fourth largest Romanesque church building in Germany. It was begun in 1040, and throughout time has hosted the tombs of the deceased prince-bishops in the basement crypt. Two previous churches on the same site were constructed in 787 and 855. One original bell, called the "Lobdeburg Bell", dates from 1257, and still remains at the church.

This church was partially destroyed near the end of WWII, but completely restored by 1967. The Lobdeburg bell was removed and stored in the crypt during the war, and is the only bell from this church to survive the war.
