Rental car or train?
by jmonroecb
I will be over in Bremen for a couple of weeks in Sept. My company will supply me with a rental car to drive back and forth to Oldenburg. Would it be easier to use the car to drive to drive around Bremen to see the sights or just use the tram? What about going to East to Hamburg or West to Groningen?

In my experience, having a car to visit major European cities is more of a liability than anything else. The old downtown cores were not built with the car in mind. The train stations are quite central and are good public transportation hubs, and many of the places you are likely to visit can be easily reached by public transport or by foot.
That being said, if you want to get out of the centre and see the landscape and small towns and villages, a car is the only way to go. Train corridors are often not the prettiest places and you can't just step out to have a closer look at something that catches your eye.

I agree with Grumpydiver, the car is king and the traffic is no problem there. Get you to many locations not access from the train, Cheers Tommy x

To see Bremen city center you'd only need your 2 feet. Lovely town, that is.
With a car you do have to reckon with traffic and paid parking.
4 hours to Amsterdam is do-able but only outside rush hours and even then you may encounter road works, etc. Chances are quite large that the train would bring you faster and easier.
Oldenburg-Bremen is slightly faster by train than by car. So if you are going sightseeing, the train may be better (and you can have a beer or two, not having to drive!).
Travel Tips for Bremen
Bremen Tip

The first night that we had a pass to leave the base some of us hopped on the train down to Bremen. It was our first experience in a big european city. We were walking along and the church bells started to ring. It was so cool to go searching for the bells and to come out of an alley into the square and see this beautiful cathedral. We had never seen anything like it. It's an image I will never forget.

Bremer harbour is a different town ... (-:

Bremen has it's own airport, so you could come by plane. However, Bremen is also easy to reach by car and train. Now-a-days the harbour has moved North to Bremerhaven, where the ships can come in.
Bus and tram connect the different places inside the town. Within the Altstadt you can easily walk all distances.
Market Square
by tini58de
The cobbles of the market square form a large Hanseatic cross. This is where the Roland statue and Bremen's most famous historic buildings are, such as the Parliament Building and Schütting. The Schütting was built between 1536 and 1538 and used to be the Merchants' Guild House. Today it houses the chamber of commerce.

When visiting Bremen, you...

When visiting Bremen, you should go and see the 'Bremer Stadtmusikanten´ (The Bremen Musicians) that have become famous by a tale about a donkey,a dog,a cat and a rooster by the Grimm brothers. The statue of the 'Bremer Stadtmusikanten´ is near the Town Hall, but not found easily because of its little size. However, I think you shouldn´t miss the little statue and rub the leg of the donkey. If you do this, you will have luck.
