Fipps der Affe
by Mariajoy
This little wooden ape is a well known character, "Fipps the Ape", whose world travel tales were told in German comic book. Help came again from Win, Rhineroll, in explaining:
"it is a famous early comic story by Wilhelm Busch and large parts of its plot are set in Bremen so that might be the reason...
Along the river
by barryg23
One of my favourite areas of Bremen was alongside the River Weser. There were much fewer tourists here than around Marktplatz and we walked past a nice market and some great ubs and restaurants. Very tempting to stop but we were running late for our brewery tour.
Worth the short journey
by bonio about Borgfelder Landhaus
In the suburb of Borgfeld, easy to get to though.
Attracted, as ever, by a brewpub and this is a really good one. Brewing area inside, just behind the bar with comfortable seating inside and out, outside for us on a warm lunchtime.
Enjoyed the beer and the menu, good choice - even for vegetarian Mrs B! and certainly very happy with our food, very tasty and well cooked.
A memorable visit and looking forward to a return oneday, there is a hotel here too, maybe we'll stay here next time?
Bremer Stadtmusikanten (Town Musicians)
by Childish
There is a small monument of the most famous Bremen musicians - the characters of the Grimm Brothers fairy tale. The bronze statue is really small (height: 2m) so we had to ask how to find it.
The statue was built by Gerhard Marcks in 1953.
When we were there we were told to make a wish and to touch the front feet of the donkey. And really there was a queue of waiting people to touch the animals and to take picture of them, so be patient.

Roland
by barryg23
The statue of Roland with his famous pointy kneecaps has stood in the Markt since 1404. Roland is Bremen's traditional protector and supposedly as long as he stands, Bremen will remain free. Interestingly, the Nazis placed a time capsule here in 1938, containing miscellaneous Nazi documents and it wasn't until 1989 that the authorities removed it!
