This lovely hotel is situated a short walk from Dammtor station in the leafy and pleasant Heimhude Strasse. I had a comfortable and clean room on the 3rd floor with ensuite facilities and a TV - whoohoo! :)) just kidding... it was really nice. Breakfast is the usual Continental fare of bread, rolls, cheese, eggs, cold meats and jams, coffee, orange juice, yoghurt, cereal, and something they think is tea. Which wasn't a problem as I always carry a few of my own from home. In fact this was the first time ever the Breakfast room assistant has commented on that, with a "Ohhhh!! you've got your own???" Yes, I have... because continental tea bags ... oh never mind. You don't miss what you've never had. (I didn't of course actually say this ... cos that would just be rude :))
Hmmmm... what is unique about the Heimhude?... can't think of anything particularly unique, except that the hotel policy for room keys is that "if you think you are going to be out past 10 o'clock in the evening, please take your key with you, as the front door will be locked". So when I asked to leave my key at reception when I was going out for the evening the kindly German gentleman said "Are you sure?? You might want to take it with you... you never know what might happen" in such a way that I blushed! LOL! A single room was 69E or 47GBP.

in my room by alza Die Kogge was great fun. The rooms are all decorated in a different style, all a little strange really. I chose the most conservative one but look at those curtains! Red veil... Spic and Span though, and comfortable. All rooms are on the second floor, closed off from the bar by many doors. Useful when you find out that the music, DJ or live, goes on until 4 a.m. It didn't bother me since I was usually at the bar until the DJ collapsed. The owner is a really nice young guy, he cooks the breakfasts until 11 a.m. (now that's better than the Youth Hostel!) and a couple of friendly people come in after 6 p.m. to help him with the crowd of habitués. He let me use the house phone when I needed it, much appreciated. They're also good at giving you your messages when you come in. Everyone talks to everyone there, and the music rocks! We all sang and danced. There was a most eccentric couple with two teens, on their holiday from Munich. The teens were quiet but the mother and I had a ball making special requests and letting our hair down (well, she was sort of quiet too but loved fun.) She was fully Gothic, stunning look at first, for a mother :-) but she fit right in with the style at Die Kogge.
Outstanding about Die Kogge: great location, you can walk to the Harbour in no time; friendly people; clean, inexpensive rooms; lively place, great music. It felt totally safe and it was never boring. Good beer, coffee, and huge breakfasts made to order. What a great and romantic place to stay, while on vacation in Hamburg ! The nice lady at the reception showed me around a bit and I was able to take some pictures of the captains quaters , the best accomodation you may get onboard of the Feuerschiff. Look at these pictures : all furniture is made of mahagony , 2 beds on top of each other, small bull-eyes facing the river Elbe and like every other cabin on Feuerschiff it includes also a small private bathroom and toilet. The prices are moderate and include a great breakfast: Captain's Cabin 75 Euros as single 120 euros as double-cabin Lightmen-Cabins : 65 for single, 100 euros as double room They only have a total of 6 cabins and 10 beds so you have to reserve well in advance !!
Feuerschiff is a place for all people enjoying the special atmosphere onboard of old ships. This includes also a bit of swinging with the waves, it is not much, but you may "feel" a bit each of the bigger ships passing by. For real cruise-fans this is NO disadvantage at all, in the contrary, it is part of the pleasure. M/S Freedom of the Seas seen from Stintfang by globetrott Jugendherberge Auf dem Stintfang has for sure one of the best views of all hostels and even most of the hotels in Hamburg : My main picture was taken from their terrace, facing Landungsbruecken. When arriving at Hauptbahnhof, you simply take U3, S1 or S3 to St.Pauli Landungsbruecken, get out of the station, walk up lots of steps and you are in the hostel.
Prices are moderate and depend also upon your age : tourists older than 27 years pay 3 euros more than young people. All prices include breakfast and linen : Doublerooms : 23,30 (26,30) euros per Person 3&4-bed-rooms : 21,80 (24,80) euros per person 5&6-bed-rooms : 18,80 (21,80 ) euros per person 8-bed-rooms : 17,30 (20,30) euros per person Theme: HotelPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Hamburg - Alfred-Wegener-Weg 5Phone: +49-40-313488Directions: Jugendherberge Auf dem Stintfang is just above the metro-station "St.Pauli Landungsbruecken" a bridge will take you directely to St.Pauli from there.Website: http://www.jugendherberge.de/jh/hamburg-stintfang/ Other Contact: Fax+49-40-315407

Cap San Diego, the old cargo-ship that is docked in the port of Hamburg offers also a few cabins for hotel-guests. There is NO breakfast available onboard and the rooms are certainly also less romantic than e.g. onboard of the "Feuerschiff". On the other hand there are mostly NO parties and restaurant-activities going on onboard after the last visitors had left the museum-ship in the late afternoon. You will also have a lot of space out on deck including a swimming-pool, BUT I am not sure if that could be used in summer !
There are several cabins available : The captains cabin consists of a sleeping-room and a living-room plus a seperate bathroom with bath-tub and toilette: it is 100 euros for double-use , including a seperate bed for the 2nd person. Breakfast is never included, but in the captains cabin you find find a jug of coffee and some snacks. ordinary cabins are 80 euros for the double-cabin and 65 euros for the single cabins both are without breakfast !
