Hamburg-Berlin-Hamburg

by petrocik

What is the fastest way to reach Berlin by train from Hamburg. I will be traveling on a Saturday later this month. I only have time for a quick visit --leaving Hamburg by train around noon and returning from Berlin later that night. I have been before, but not for many years. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

The fastest to reach Berlin "by train from Hamburg" is *caugh* by train:

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe (speaks English)

From: Hamburg Hbf
To: Berlin Hbf

Hbf = Hauptbahnhof / Central Station

Here is the direct English link for bahn.de:

http://www.bahn.com/i/view/overseas/en/index.shtml

You will see that you have a choice of departures, but at a journey time of around 1.5 hours a daytrip should be no problem at all.

If you book online in advance you can take advantage of pretty good savings fares. Bahn.de will send you an eticket. Print that out, and present the email plus the card you used to pay (essential) to the guard. Works very well, in my experience.

Well the form is slightly different in that it is smaller and doesn't have all the options the other one comes with.
Anyway, both will do just fine.

Works fine for me, certainly. :-)

Travel Tips for Hamburg

The Elbe - Port Buildings

by yooperprof

Hamburg is Germany's largest port - and Europe's second largest. (I think Rotterdam is #1.)

Statistics: every year 12,000 ships load and unload some 70,000,000 tons of cargo here.

A moderate bluff rises above the old port buildings, giving an excellent view of the bustling harbor. Yes, those are grape vines planted on the hillside!

St. Pauli Millerntor

by chancay

There are two big soccer teams in Hamburg, one of them is the HSV, the only team that until now never left the 1. Bundeliga....and the other team is FC St. Pauli, a team that has the best fans ever although they do not play very good currently (3. Liga) but their support is extraordinary. This team is close connected with St. Pauli, also called the "Kiez". The new president of the team is the owner of the "Schmidt´s Tivoli" theatre, another important institution of the Kiez.

Herbertstrasse, just for the funny advertisment:-)

by globetrott about Herbertstrasse

Herbertstrasse is the most famous place for men to go "windowshopping" or mostly just "window-browsing"
This street is fenced at both sides with high walls and when you are looking at the poster in the middle of that fence in my 1st picture, you may read : Fuer mehr Vorspiel - some sort of a pun, that I cannot really explane, because I am not really an expert for football ;-p There is NO dresscode, BUT
Women are absolutely forbidden to step behind that fence, maybe for the fact that there are aready lots of women behind the windows...
Photography is absolutely forbidden INside these fences as well and I may not recommend to try it anyway - these people don't have a lot of humor when it comes to Photography

Try Toscana, try Italian cuisine

by homa about ANNA

ANNA is not far from "Hanse Viertel". Just next to the tiny canal and if you book your table early enough, you can sit right next to the window side. From the street Bleichenbruecke and follow the stairs down to the entrance of Toscana in Hamburg! The restaurant gave me a warm and comfortable feeling. It has been recommended by the famous "Michelin Restaurant Guide". Didn't remember exactly, but both my mom and me were satisfied and wanted to go there again!

Fishmarket

by nepalgoods

Well, the fishmarket is not what it used to be. It is a big market and lots of people, mainly tourists are there, but fish is not much sold on the market anymore. Fruits, flowers, cheese and more are sold nowadays.

There is also a fleamarket, food stalls and lots of music and fun.

The fishmarket exists since 1703. It starts every Sunday in summer at 5 an din winter at 7 o'clock.
