Die grosse Freiheit
by chancay about St. Pauli and Reeperbahn
Die grosse Freiheit is as the Reeperbahn surely one of the most famous streets of Hamburg. Several night clubs are placed here, as well a church at the end of the street. One famous spot is e.g the Dollhouse, a table dance club, prefered from these thousands of bachelor parties (stag nights) that are strolling around in Hamburg every weekend at least.
Euro-Asian Meets Pacific Rim
by ericaj. about EAST
Large, modern and urban , renovated in a dimly lit loft style space in St. Pauli. Billowly white drape accents with chocolate colored wooden floors and crstal glass arrangements Culinarily speaking, it's in the same catagory of internationally hip sushi eateries like New York's Nobu or Ming Sai's west coast eatery, Blue Ginger. The patrons range from stylish 20 somethings in jeans, to chic businessmen and elegant office executives. If you're from a large city and looking for that fast paced "dinner in the metropolis" feeling, then this is the place for you. Definitely one of the "in" places to be seen, but unfortunately not heard, as the noise level in this place makes it nearly impossible to engage in conversation . The food is good, the aesthetic lovely enough, but overall EAST fits itself a bit too comfortably into the "city chic" cookie cutter mold of restaurants; once you enter, you could be in Paris, LA, or Manhattan and not be able to distinguish it from any other Asian nouvelle establishment in those cities. I remember the sushi being good enough, and everything beautifully presented, but overall the experience was rather forgettable as it reminded me of at least 10 other restaurants I've been to throughout Europe and theUnited States. The menu is heavily "fusion" oriented. Tasty but not particularly memorable. My quick picks would be-
Starter: Tuna tartare with avacado and crispy lotus roots
Small Plate: Grilled filet of lamb with spicy mint sauce
Sushi: Tandoori roll w/ cucumber, sundried tomato and garlic, seved with yogurt....
Again, everything is artfully presented at EAST, but a bit overdone as some of the accoutrements leave the diner unsure as to how to proceed eating their meal with some semblance of proper table ettiquette intact. Items are particularly difficult to maneuver from plate to mouth whether you're using a knife, fork, spoon or chopsticks. The menu is imaginative and ambitious enough, but truly leaves something to be desired by way of having a real dining "experience".
Fashionable Shopping Centers Between the Canals
by RhineRoll
Hamburg's inner city has two separate shopping areas. In Mönckebergstraße between the central railway station and the city hall you will find all the major department store chains. The quarter just south of the Binnenalster lake contains many canals and some of Germany's most fashionable and expensive malls. If you do not have such a thick wallet, it is still very nice to walk through the streets, across the canals looking at the people.
Michaeliskirche
by yooperprof
Michaeliskirche - "Our Michael" - has come to be a symbol of Hamburg, and is easily one of the most distinguishable landmarks in the city. It's very interesting elevated tower is one of the marvels of the Northern German (and Protestant) Baroque.
Images and models of the church abound.
