Monuments - Otto van Bismarck
by yooperprof
Count Otto van Bismarck (1803-1890) was the Chancellor first of Prussia, then of a United Germany, from 1859 until 1890. His policies were largely responsible for the creation of the "Second Reich". Conservative and traditional, Bismarck fulfilled the national aspirations of millions of 19th century Germans, but at the cost of aligning German interests with the authoritarian and militaristic ambitions of the Kaisers and their aristocratic supporters.
The Bismarck Monument in Hamburg reflects a widespread conviction that German nationhood was "bound up" with the forceful projection of German masculinity. At least that's my interpretation!
Treepenviertel ... Paradise for Stairway-Fans
by AnnaLupilla
Yet, the neet, partly thatched houses line up the picturesque hill till nowadays. As there are no streets, you can walk through this part of town via many many stairways which only lead you to more stairways and connect the promenade of the River Elbe with higher-located houses. This is a MUST!
S1 S-Bahn to Airport: pay attention
by steedappeal
The S1 S-Bahn from the main Hauptbanhof is an inexpensive way to travel to the Hamburg Airport. Just make sure that you are in the FIRST 3 CARS of the train (indicated by special lettering near the front-end of the platform). Otherwise, you will end up not reaching your destination since the carriage splits at Ohlsdorf station.
Also, don't be shy about asking train staff to help you to purchase your tickets from the complicated vending machines. Also, pay special attention at the Hauptbanhof since the S-Bahn train signage is buried by all the other signage in the station.
Cozy Cafe
by chris.hh about Cafe Olé
This was a cute place in Altona-Ottensen, some few minutes away from the Ottenser Hauptstraße, just follow the Rothstraße to the left. It was a area with a nice atmosphere, more calm and not crowded. There were some cute cafés and restaurants.
Cafe Olé had a small tarrace under big trees, and the offer were nice small meal like baguette, salad, quiche, etc. Also the bakery offer looked very good. They use mainly organic ingrediences. The smell was great because they were baking some deserts;-) Also they sell wine (that's why the "not-fitting" website).
So if you are around this area and need a time-off from the crowd - I recommend it. The prizes were very fair.

St. PAULI!! If you're here...

St. PAULI!! If you're here during football season, you have to catch a St. Pauli match - one of the most leftist teams in the game. The crowd and atmosphere at the games are unlike any sporting match you've ever likely seen!
