In that Hamburg´s a big city it is a shame that there isn´t much of modern art here. Visit the museum 'Kunst der Gegenwart' (beneath trainstation), there´re some nice paintings, but don´t expect too much...

What about: rental car to Dresden and from there by train.
Found with AVIS a VW Golf for EUR 72,00 for tomorrow.
Or to Zittau (also an AVIS branch) and from there by train. Zittau is a detour (further east) with the car (but same price) and also by train. But has the advantage that you can travel from there on Czech railway tariff.
Last possible connection:
Zittau dep 18:29
Liberec arr 18:59
Liberec dep 19:03
Turnov arr 19:45
Turnov dep 20:20
Praha hl.n. arr 22:42
Single ticket 2nd class is CZK 224,- per person (~ EUR 7,50).
fab suggestion!!! thank you! looking into this now.

Why so complicated suggestions? there are direct trains from Hamburg to Prague via Berlin. Look at www.bahn.de
Normal ticket Hamburg to Prague 2nd class: EUR 84,80.
(By the way - the Europa Specials are not finished, but they have to be booked at least 3 days in advance. One day before was just too late.)
Thus 4 x 84,80 = 339,20
Rental Car EUR 72,00 + 4 x EUR 7,50 (Zittau - Prague) = EUR 102,00.
Even with fuel (~ EUR 40) this route will be roughly EUR 200,00 cheaper. And this IS a reason.
From what I heard (maybe outdated...), the rental companies take a big additional fee for returning the car to other place than where it was picked up, and additional very high mandatory insurances for taking the car to the Eastern Europe...
Sorry, didn't read your pos to the end - Zittau-Prague by train...
yep, the car option was waaaay cheaper than a train. thanks so much for your help abalada - you were spot on!

The name of this café-bar-restaurant is "Turnhalle", which means "gym" in english. Various dishes till 11 p.m., after that pizza and bruschetta only.
In the same street (Lange Reihe) there are a lot of other cool looking bars too, you have the choice.
The coolest way getting to Hamburg is - if you come by car - driving one descent before (or one after if you come from the North) the beginning of Hamburg on the A7. Here you can drive over the Köhlbrand-bridge, where you have an spectacular view over hamburg. After the bridge you can make a great racing through the habour region (should be no flashings there) before comming into the city.
Be certain to take a boat tour, we did and I loved it! Hamburg is a large city and although walking is great exercise, the boats show you things you might not see otherwise! I would take the boat trip at the beginning of your stay in Hamburg because while on the boat ride, you might see or learn about a place you'll want to visit on foot while you are there.
There are all types....tour boats, dinner cruises, water taxis, boat rentals, paddle boats......and more.
You can catch the boats almost everywhere there is water. Just go to the city center and you can't miss them or the water!
The Krameramtswohnungen is a small side street, just behind St. Michaelis church.
It's worth stepping in, despite its touristy nature now (it's free!) to see this last remaining 17th-century housing.
