Sternschanze Neighborhood - Live, Work, Play?

by amerikanska

I was just curious if there are sporting activities, clubs, schools, etc that I could get involved in while living in the Sternschanze neighborhood?

This appears to be the coolest part of town to live in.

Hey!

Could you be more specific about what you're after? I might be able to help you...

Hi,

Would you mind letting me know if there are any community organizations in Sternschanze that offer interesting classes that I could take to meet people?

Some good bars and cafe recommendations would be great. I want to stay away from the Reeperbahn.

Hmm, ...

The local community college can be found at http://www.vhs-hamburg.de/ . Their office 'MITTE' is located right on Schanzenstraße and they're offering all kinds of courses including languages. Unfortunately the website's completely in german ...
You'll find flyers for smaller local stuff on the streets.

As far as bars go just walk around Schanzenstraße and Schulterblatt and down to Neuer Pferdemarkt, you'll see what kind of crowd goes to which place and if that's what you're after. I personally like "Zum grünen Jäger" which is the single house located right in the middle of Neuer Pferdemarkt next to the tiny park.

Have fun,
J

you will meet lots of people at night on the sternschanze- there's always something going on! but why would you want to avoid the reeperbahn? it's so unique and not dangerous- as long as you don't offend any1. you should really vistit it. i have been to many other cities and i have never had as much fun partying as i always have on the reeperbahn! don't be afraid- go there on a saturday night and you'll love it.
if you want to find some other nice bars than the ones at the sternschanze you should try an go to altona. just a few minutes from the subwaystation and you'll find lots of exciting bars.

have fun in hamburg!!

oh- and don't forget to check out one of the beach clubs in the "große elbstarße" on nice summer evenings. you'll have a caribbean night at the shore of the elb. try to go there on weeknights, because it's simply too crowded on friday and saturday nights.

Travel Tips for Hamburg

Winter packing list

by bzh

The usual thing that you can carry around easily Hamburg can be very cold in winter so make sure you have the whole complement of scarf, wooly hat, warm jumper and gloves if you intend to visit during that period. A temperature of -20 Celsius is not unheard of so plan for it. The usual. You can find anything in Germany. The usual wide angle and telephoto lenses for street photographs. Black and white photography can come out amazingly in Hamburg, especially in winter.
A panoramic camera can produce stunning shots, especially around the harbour, and is worth taking if you have one. Lip balm for frosty days.

A good and beautiful German pub!

by Carletto76 about Omas Apotheke

Located in the Schanzen-Viertel, close to the Hostel and the U3, you can find "Omas Apotheke", a beautiful pub which once was a pharmacy. You can choose among various German and Irish beers from the tap. They have also the Kölsch beer served "by the meter"!

Authentic Persian

by Kushelkitten about Tehran

A small but uncrowded Persian restaurant near the ZOB (Bus Station) in Hamburg. This isnt a Persian restaurant run by Germans but run by an Iranian family. It has lovely atmosphere and even better food. The menu is in German and Persian language. The staff is friendly and accomodating.
A great place to stop after a visit to the Museum of Kunst and Gewerbe which is on the other side of the ZOB.

Open daily 12:00-22:30 The chicken in pomegranate sauce with saffan rice.

Going to see the Fish......

by LIsaanne

Well this is a perfect activity for those early Sunday mornings... or late Saturday nights. I haven't been to the market since 2003 so my Memory is a little foggy. I seem to remember some food, lots o guys trying to sell fish and tossing it around. An inside sorta cafeteria area with live music. The main memory is that I had the greatest time! You should go and check it out!

Check out the website below for a great story of Matthew's trip to the market..

Speicherstadt Museum

by chris.hh

The Speicherstadt is an area with lots of about 100 year old storage houses. It is very a cute area that definately is worth a visit. In former times you had many houses where people stored coffee, tea and oriental carpets. Up to today Hamburg is an important place for carpet trading. You'll find lots of arabic signs there.
Today the Speicherstadt is undergoing a development into an area where lots of office are opened. Expecially the creative love this area: The Stage Entertainment (musicals) is here as well as many companies acting in advertisment, design, etc.

The history of this area is shown in the museum "Speicherstadtmuseum". It is situated in such an old storage house. It is a nice exhibition, not a real huge one, but I think it is pretty cute. There are many photographs, you'll find equipment people used for their work in former times. As far as I remember there was also a little cafe where you could test tea - but this might have been a temporary thing because I was there during the Long Night of Museums (also see my list with event dates).
Speicherstadtmuseum, St. Annenufer 2, 20457 Hamburg
phone: +49 (0)40 321191
open tue-sun 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
entrance adults 3 EUR, students 1,90 EUR
