The Elbe - Hamburg City Fleet
by yooperprof
Strolling along the Elbe Harbor on a beautiful Saturday in December. The name of the street is the Johannisbollwerk - but I don't know if that also applies to the Promenade.
Being a landlubber from the dry state of Kansas, yooperprof is endlessly fascinated by working ports.
Oevelgoenne - a great museum & lovely houses
by globetrott
Kaeppn Luehr' s Museum / Oevelgoenner Seekiste is a small museum in Ovelgoenne and you may visit it mainly at the weekends and of course also upon appointment. Kaeppn Luehr was a boat-builder who always wanted to become a sailor, BUT he was not able to, because his eyes were not good enough. So he started to collect everything he could find about sailors, sailing-accesories and ship-equippments, sailor's souvenirs etc.
Everybody just called him Kaeppen Luehr - it made sense to skip the "T", because he was of cours NOT a real Captain, but Kaeppen sounds just the same in the local dialect ;-)
Besides Seekiste you will see also lots of lovely houses, when walking along Strandpromenade !
Seekiste is about 800 meters from the Museumshafen and the end of bus #112. Simply walk the small street along the river Elbe and you will pass by it !
The Address is Ovelgoenne - Strandpromenade 62
Getting around in Hamburg and around
by alza
I drove into Hamburg in late afternoon, heading for the Youth Hostel. Was told to get on Ost-West Strasse til Landungsbrücken. I drove off, happy that I'd taught myself enough German to know I was looking for a bridge... but never saw a bridge.
No one I asked had heard of the Youth Hostel. I finally realised that Landungsbrücken is a landing, a promenade where people hang out.
I parked nearby & got various directions to the Hostel, everyone saying "just over there". With a huge backpack & arms full, I wish it had been downhill & not 15 minutes walk away! Especially since the Youth Hostel was full & sent me further "just down this road", to a hotel. Another 15 minutes. I didn't drive in Hamburg after that. But it was easy driving out of the city to Lübeck once, & to Berlin the last day.
The U-Bahn & S-Bahn were supposed to be complicated to figure out. I didn't think so. The whole public transport system is very efficient. A Tageskarte is good for all public transit & with it, the ferry to Blankenese is free.
The pic is the Inner Alster lake (Binnenalster in German), with the Alsterarkaden in the background. This is a white neo-Renaissance arcade with great shops & a beautiful view on the lake.
Bar
by chris.hh about Die Herren Simpel
This is pretty a good bar where you also can have cocktails. I think they are pretty good but I am rather a beer drinker... So check it. It is a atmosphere there, a long narrow space but if you are early you might catch a seat in the small backwards room. I like the design ot the location. It's modern and lovingly done. You can get beer here and cocktails.
Go aboard the Rickmer Rickmers
by jenniferchin
From what I gathered, this ship had a very long history ~ from a steel full rigger at its infancy to the presently proud windjammer it is today.
The amazing thing about this ship is that its restoration took 4 long years with funds totally from donations !! A lot of love went into this museum ship :-)
