Advice where to stay in Hamburg

by shedman

I am arriving by train, I would like to stay somewhere central where there are many bars and restaurants and good night life, what areas/districts should I look for when booking my hotel?

One of the place is St. Pauli with its Reeperbahn (http://www.reeperbahn-reeperbahn.de). It is Germany's biggest and most famous red light district. Beside typical adult entertainmant you will also find discos, bars, theaters, etc. Of course it is sleazy, but it is a tourist attraction where everybody goes to.
An other popular place is the Schanzenviertel. It is one of these quarters which was run down, then discovered by alternative people and artists who opened pubs and restaurants which also became popular for anybody else.
If you want it posh you can go to Eppendorf. There you find sophisticated cafes, bars and restaurants.
If you like to stay in St. Pauli for low costs here are two links:

If you have (much) more money:

An expensive one in an old watertower (super!):

Hi,
as hostels have a look at Schanzenstern (hip and livly quarter Schanzenviertel), Superbude (close to main station) or Youth Hostel Stintfang (harbor view). As hotel I always recommend YoHo (Young Hotel, between Schanzenviertel and St. Pauli). If you just want to do normal partying I won't recommend the Reeperbahn area. Lots of drunk, and pretty loud.
Have a look at my tips for little more detailed description.
Chris.

Travel Tips for Hamburg

Power Pass

by AnnaLupilla

Power Pass is a great institution for people under the age of 30. It allows free access to an awful lot of sights, or at least gives discounts on many entrance fees, pubs, bars and discos. It's MUCH more worth it than Hamburg Card!!! Besides you may use every kind of public transportation there is for FREE, for the amount of days you have your Power Pass with you. The Pass costs you 6,70€ for the first day, you can buy up to seven days, day two to seven cost only 3€ each!

Horseriding / Horse racing

by chris.hh

A special interest tip - for horse sport lovers: In Hamburg there is the most important German Race every year at the Horner Rennbahn. One week in June there are 2,400 meter races with horses from Germany and abroad. Special is that just 20 are allowed to start, and horses just are allowed to start once in their lifetime - with the age of three years.
The race takes place in Hamburg for more than 130 years and it is supposed to be the most important one in Germany, the highlight of the sports-year and known world wide. Also, it is one of the oldest races taking place somewhere else than in UK.

The St. Michaelis...

by PartyRambo

The St. Michaelis church.
Originally built between 1649 and 1661, it has burned down 3 times, the latest during World war II. However, the city has rebuilt the exterior (and interior!) to its original look.
There's a beautiful balcony that curves around the interior.
