Rathaus in 1800's

by eigger

I have a print of a drawing/painting titled "Das Rathaus in Hamburg" Vortag von B.S. Berendsohns in Hamburg. It looks like it was done in the 1800's. Who is the artist? On one side of the print it says C. Laeisz and on the other side is J. Gray sc. Can you tell me a little about this drawing/painting?

Carl Martin Laeisz (1803-1864) was a German artist.

Can't find any more info about him though, sorry.

The artist is probably Carl Martin Laeisz (1803-1864), painter in Hamburg. What you have is, I assume, a steel engraving after one of Laeisz' paintings, done by James Gray, engraver and lithographer in Hamburg in the 19th century, dated around 1840 (another copy is listed in the inventory of an antique book and art shop in Hamburg, unfortunately without a photo).

This is all I found in a quick Google search...

J. Gray sc.
sc. = sculpsit
Jens Gray has made this steel engraving after a painting of Carl Martin Laeisz ( 1803 - 1864).

Jens Gray was a lithograph and steel engraver from Hamburg. Most of his works are between 1842 and 1868.

Travel Tips for Hamburg

Climate

by nepalgoods

Hamburg seems to have more rain and storms than Hannover. from the near North Sea come many strong winds and rain. The window of our living room is to the West. We have aview over Hamburg and we always see the weather coming. The clouds and the sunsets are very impressive.

Where All of Hamburg Meets

by ericaj. about Bar Hamburg

Fashionably casual, as one would dress in any upscale, urban bar in L.A., New York, London or Paris. Jeans are perfectly acceptable, though the the shoes, whether sneakers or sandals, dressy, tend to be of the trendier varieties that are considered "hot" and "of the moment".

go hungry to Eisenbahn-Wunderland !!

by globetrott about Modellbahn-Wunderwelt-cafeteria

Eisenbahn-Wunderland has a really great and even cheap cafeteria !
I have been to many museums and theme-parks, where the owners try to make a lot of extra-money by restaurants, toilets etc. simply because they know that their guests have no other chance than to accept high prices....
In Eisenbahn-Wunderland everything is cheap and tasty !!
This restaurant is INside the Eisenbahn-Wunderland,
so you need a ticket to go there !! I spent the whole afternoon in Modellbahn-Wunderland and really enjoyed their food a lot :
I had a fish-fillet with potatoe-salad and a large coke and payed just 4,50 euros
for desert I had "Rote Gruetze" - a giant portion in a full soup-plate + extra-vanilla-sauce for just 1,30 euros. (b.t.w. in Rathaus-restaurant you pay 6,50 euros for Rote Gruetzte)
Rote Gruetzte is a kind of fruit-stew consisting of Rhubarb, strawberries, rasberries, cranberries etc.

Central Station - Hauptbahnhof

by Burtty

The central station is an ideal starting point for you to star your tour in Hamburg. There are some bread or fast food shops in the central station for those who do not want to go to the expensive restaurant.
