New Architecture - Hafen City
by yooperprof
Hafen City - Harbor City - is creating an entirely new neighborhood of condos, apartments, and offices along the canals of Hamburg's former free-trade zone.
Lots of great windows over the canals - but in my opinion some of the street facades of the buildings are bland, if not overbearing, and there seem to be a lack of public spaces as well. I don't know if I'd want to live down in this area - it seems somewhat cold and heartless.

Speicherstadt: This is the area of the city where you can see the old warehouses. This amazing architecture in red and brown briks tells about the prosperity of the city due to its huge port. Don't hesitate to take the boat ride in the port: it is very interesting and impressive.
Hamburg-Card is a great deal !

Hamburg-card is a great deal, especially when you intend to take cruises, plan to visit plenty of museums and will use the public transportation-system.
There is a Hamburg-card for 1 day for 7,50 Euros
and one for 3 consecutive days for 17,40 Euros.
A group-ticket for up to 5 people travelling togeather is just 11,20 Euros for 1 day and 25 Euros for 3 days.
All means of public transportation will be included in section A+B, that is good enough for Wedel and Pinneberg in the west and Bergedorf in the east of Hamburg.
day-tickets ONLY for the transportation are just about 2 euros cheaper every day.
There are even some shipping-lines inside the port of hamburg included in that ticket :
#62 is going from Landungsbruecken to Finkenwerder every 15 minutes.

Kajuete ! along the Alster again for a good & romantic dinner.
Location just few centimeters from the water. Fish & potatoes with good white wine (in this case it was (I cannot tell u right now cause the way Frau Fraedrich takes notes is simply awful :-)).
walk along the port

The port may be a nice spot if you want to check the huge port(the biggest in Germany and third in Europe by the way), the large ships, huge container terminals and the doggy area of St.Pauli. Apart from that it’s a place full of restaurants and souvenir shops but also the place where you can take a boat tour through the port of Hamburg. I was suggested the route #62 but as we didn’t have much time we preferred to walk around a bit and find a place to eat something.
We noticed many ships coming in from all over the world but I was surprised by some really huge yachts (some of them have helicopter landing area!), I guess they belong to some billionaires.
There are boat tours around the harbour, they last 1 hour and they cost 12 euros(there are also some that last 2 hours). Check the companies outside the subway station. Have in mind that the small boats can go closer to big vessels while the big boats cant even enter some canals.
