area to stroll around for 2-3 hours

by mindcrime

Is there any area where we can stroll around for 2-3 hours one evening in Hamburg? I'm looking for something like Alexanderplatz in Berlind where you can see the Town Hall, churches, interesting statues etc and you dont have to walk too much.

What's more it would be nice if there are a few good pubs and restaurants there.

We wont have more time and we dont want to walk a lot as we'll be already tired that day from the trip.

Binnenalster is a good area to sit in a gardenrestaurant and watch the water, the swans and the boats and there are also expensive shops in that area for windowshopping.

my favorite place would be on the boat/bus #62:
The public transportation-system of Hamburg includes also a few shipping-lines and that way all holders of a Hamburg-card or other day-tickets could save a lot of money, as they will not need to go on a regular Hafenrundfahrt) and still explore some interesting parts of Hamburger Hafen (port).
My favorite line was #62, leaving every 15 minutes at St.Pauli Landungsbruecken and taking you through the port along the river Elbe to Oevelgoenne and finally to Finkenwerder at the south-bank of the Elbe.
The total cruise to Finkenwerder takes about 35 minutes, and when you calculate a bit in advance, you could even make such a tour in the right moment, when big cruise-liners are sailing through the port of Hamburg, because these small ships will not change their itinerary...
besides #62 there is also #61 taking you from Landungsbruecken to Kohlbrandbruecke
#73 and #75 will take you through different parts of the industrial port

Travel Tips for Hamburg

Hans Hummel Figures

by weewatty

Dotted around the City Centre you will see these wee glass fibre figures in loads of different designs.

Seems this wee dude is the mascot of the city and there are 100 of him all designed by artists and most carrying a theme, they are sponsored by hotels, businesses etc and add a colourful addition to the centre of the city.

AOL Arena

by Carletto76

The AOL Arena (formely know as VolksparkStadion) is Hamburg HSV football team stadium. It's really a very nice stadium, for about 55,000 people.
Inside the stadium there is the HSV Museum and one of the 3 HSV fan-shops.

In front of it there's the Color Line Arena, a smaller (and roof-closed) sports building for hockey and other sports matches.

Hamburg's crazy nightlife!

by Carletto76 about St. Pauli and Reeperbahn

Everyone knows anything about the Reeperbahn and the nearby streets in the St.Pauli district. Going there by day it's an horrible street, but at night it's full of people walking up and down among sex-shops, night clubs, disco-bars and so on. You can find any place you like in this zone and there are surely many ways to enjoy your nightlife in here!
Sex is not a "tabu" at all here and if you want, you can really practice a lot! ;-)

-Try the 'Kartoffelkeller'...

by chatzchen

-Try the 'Kartoffelkeller' near the Michel Church (Deichstr. 21. They have various type of potatoes.

-At the 'Grönninger' Brauhaus (Ost West Str. 47) and Restaurant you can enjoy very good homebrewed Beer!

-For small hunger try a 'Fallafel Sandwich' for 5,- DM at 'Al Pasha' Egyptian Restaurant (Hoheluftchaussee)

-Good food in the 'Factory' Pub and Restaurant (Hoheluftchaussee 95), I mostly like their Chilli and the California Salat with a very good Curry Dressing.

- Try the 'Madrid' a very good Spanish and Portuguese Restaurant at the Grindelallee 69 .

-Very good Brunch at the 'September' which is Feldstr. 60 near the Heiligengeistfeld, Telefon: 43 76 11. Brunch will start Sunday morning at 10am until 2pm, cost ~23,- DM, it is good to make a reservation.

-Brunch at 'Max & Consorten' Spadenteich 7, Telefon: 24 56 17, near Hauptbahnhof North every Sundays for ~10,- DM

-Breakfast Buffet at 'Alex Brasserie' weekday for 9,90 DM Weekend Brunch.

-In Wandsbek a very good Portuguese Restaurant is the 'El Pulpo' in the Wandsbeker Zollstraße 25. They have wonderful fish dishes.

- Hamburg has a lot of good Restaurants, I could recommend much more. If you like you should try the Hamburger national-dish calles 'Labskaus' a mix of Potatoes, corned beef and some vegetable called 'rote Beete' and one fried egg on top. It is not my favourite dish but some people like it.
