Harburger Schützenfest
by Kushelkitten
Intro
Yesterday as I was drinking my first cup of coffee I heard the sound of drums, flutes, and bells. It took me awhile to realize what it was. It was the parade kicking off the Harburger Schützenfest.
What is a Schützenverein?
In Hamburg-Harburg and many other towns in Germany men (and women) get together in their Schützen Vereinen aka Shooting Clubs and spend their weekends hunting and/or skeet shooting. Once a year the clubs in Hamburg-Harburg get together and have a big festival. There are four of these clubs in HH-Harburg
The Fest
The fest is where they crown the Schützenkönig aka The Shooting King (or queen/Königin). This person is determined by shooting a giant plywood bird, that looks like the one in the photo. Whoever blows the head off of this bird is king for the year. The king then buys drinks for all the Club members. Which I imagine gets rather expensive.
At the fest there are small rides for kids, food stands, and music. This year for example a very popular Hamburg band Lotto King Karl is performing. Oh and not to forget there is also fireworks. The fest last 8 days.
Where its at
The Harburger Schützenfest takes place in June every year at Schwarzenberg in Hamburg-Harburg.
Schwarzenberg is a park/ and festival grounds that is situated on Schwarzenberg Strasse in between HH-Harburg and HH-Heimfeld.
very little grossery shops everywhere
by chancay about Kiosk ;-)
little shops you often can´t enter, there is just enough place for one person inside with all articles around. you get here alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, snacks, cigarettes, chewing gums, city maps and machine oil! a bit more than in supermarkets
Use the HVV
by Bigs
Use the public transport to get around. It's going everywhere you want. I love the part between Landungsbruecken and Roedingsmarkt, as it runs along the port. It's one of the most scenic tram routes in the world I think. Well, it's only two stops but worth it.....
Landungsbrücken
by Virginia09
The Landungsbrücken are one of Hamburg prettiest sights. You can go there to take a stroll by the riverside and watch the huge ships pass by on their way to the habour.
On a sunny weekendday the Landungsbrücken will be crowded and you can see and meet a lot of interesting people. But also on rainy days the Landungbrücken are worth a visit. The city has a sepcial, calm mood on those days and if you have a nice, waterproof coat why not go out an get some fresh air?
When you're done walking and watching, you can have a stop at one of the restaurants, cafes or "Imbissbuden" to have a coffee, soda or a "Currywurst" (sausage pieces covered with a sauce of ketchup and curry- very delicious!!).
Speicherstadt
by weewatty
This is an area of warehouses, yes thats warehouses, many of which have been converted into offices, or visitor attractions. Having said that alot of them are still used as working warehouses.
Striking buildings in red brick stretch for some distance. You will find bothe the Hamburg Dungeon and the Spice Museum in this area as well as some massive model railway which the locals seemed quite excited about, beats me.
