Der Hafen -
U3 Baumwall; U3, S1, S3 Landungsbrücken I have been to the “Hafen” many, many times with ever changing impressions. It is not exactly a beautiful place with many ugly buildings and big ships and so on. But it all contributes to a very special feeling. It is like to be at the sea, your nose smells the salt in the air and your head goes on a journey to distant places. It is the reason why Hamburg is usually considered as “a gate to the world”.
Especially nice are the evenings there with the sunset over the river Elbe.

Concert in the 'Hauptkirche St.Nicolai'.
Unlike other Churches, instead of the classical cross, a painting of 'Jesus with his torturer' hangs from the endless heigh ceiling. I had the chance to attent a Bach concert watching the magical painting. My soul dissolved in the music and lost into the strange, magical, hypnotizing painting... Follow and don't miss a concert at this church. (Located in Klosterstern)
More on getting around

I walked a lot for 3-4 days. Hamburgers all seem to ride their bikes in town and with bike paths everywhere, I felt like renting a bike myself.
Walking around the Aussenalster was one of the most pleasant things I did. Sailboats, rowboats, windsurfers & big ships all compete on the water, very exciting! Parks & footpaths all around, lined with cafés & marinas.
The best is to take a boat ride to Winterhude & take in the scenery. If you choose to walk back, don't miss Leinpfadstrasse with all its gorgeous villas. I read that there are boat rides along the Alsterfleet (locks canal) to the Elbe River but didn't see that.
A tour of the harbour is a must. It's called Hafenrundfahrt & you take the boat by the Rickmer Rickmers museum ship at Landungsbrücken.
If you're like me & enjoy even a ferry ride, you'll be in seventh heaven in Hamburg!
The pic is a monument to those who fell during the First world war. I found it stark and moving.

Window shop in Neuer Wall
by ranger49
Our friend wanted to show us the smart shops and "malls" but we were delayed by stopping to watch a demolition squad at work.
The space has been filled by a modern building designed I was told by an Italian but I would love to knowwhat became of the small shop to the left with the beautifully tiled frontage!
But if you want to shop this is the area to head for - some compare it with 5th Avenue NY.
