This was a very comfortable hotel on the outskirts of Hamburg. The room had a mini bar and TV but no tea/coffee maker. A short walk away was a small park and a supermarket.
I am arranging a family trip, 8 of us including active grandparents and two 19 year olds. We will be arriving by train from Bremen and staying for 2 nights.
Any tips on the best area to stay in would be helpful.I was thinking of staying near to the main railway station?
We like trying local food and beer so any recommendations welcome.
Thank you
Jude xx

The immediate proximity of Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) is a bit shabby and - as so often - seems to attract beggars and junkies.
Try finding an accomodation west of Hauptbahnhof, between Moenckebergstrasse, Jungfernstieg, Dammtor and Roedingsmarkt - all of them being subway or S-Bahn stations.

The part at and arround train stations are not the best, even in Germany. But this city is big and you have also a lot of good places, hotels, in the center and not far from the main station. Beside food and beer - you can spend some time in the transformed old docks as there is the world biggest miniature train and railway exposition called Wunderland.

Since you mentioned 'local food': Locals in Hamburg don't eat local food.
What I wrote here on 'local food' in Berlin, goes for Hamburg as well: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1b55a7/

Hamburg SV - Hansa Rostock, AOL Arena, 23 Apr 2005
by weewatty
Managed to get tickets for Hamburg SV versus Hansa Rostock at the Hamburg SV club shop in the centre of the city.
A capacity crowd of 55,500 packed the incredibly impressive AOL Arena for the game, the fans seemed right up for it, continuously singing their hearts out throughout.
The game ended 3-0 to Hamburg but that did'nt seem to dampen the spirits of the 4,000 odd Hansa fans who remained bouyont for the hole game.
The idea of allowing fans to stand instead of sit down at German games is something i wish would be introduced into the British game, makes for a cracking atmosphere. Hamburg SV home top and a Scarf.

BEST DINING EXPERIENCE ON THE RIVER BY NIGHT
by STEFZAMM about ALSTER PAVILLON
THIS WAS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE BIGGEST DINER THAT I VISITED IN HAMBURG. ITS A MORE KIND OF MEETING PLACE FOR PEOPLE (MOSTLY YOUNG) THAN IT CAN BE REFERRED TO AS A RESTAURANT, THIS FOR THE REASON THAT YOU CAN POP BY FOR A DRINK, COFFEE, SNACK OR EVEN A MEAL. THERE IS QUITE A VARIETY IN THE MENU AND THE STAFF ARE REALLY FRIENDLY. AT THE SIDE THERE ARE TABLES OVERLOOKING THE RIVER AND ALMOST FROM EVERYWHERE IN THE RESTAURANT AT NIGHT YOU CAN ENJOY THE SPLENDOUR OF THE RIVER AND THE BUILDINGS SURROUNDING IT. ON THAT PARTICULAR NIGHT IT WAS HALLOWEEN AND THE ATMOSPHERE WAS REALLY GOOD. IT WAS VERY BUSY. I NOTICED THERE WERE BOAT TRIPS NEAR BY WHICH MUST BE IDEAL DURING THE DAY. ANOTHER PLUS IS THAT ITS CLOSE TO THE SHOPS AND WALKING DISTANCE FROM THE UNDERGROUND. CANNOT TELL MY FAVOURITE DISH, I HAD A SNACK.. A MEGA SANDWICH .. IF YOU CAN CALL IT A SNACK. THE FOOD WAS GOOD AND IN BIG PORTIONS YET I COULD NOT FOCUS ON THE FOOD FOR THE ATMOSPHERE WAS AMAZING.
