RE: Champions League Football

The game is on German pay tv Premiere. You might have luck at William McLean's Scotish Pub (unless he shows the Liverpool or Munich game). The pub's located in Barnerstr. 10a, less than five minutes walk north of Altona train station, right next to the S1 tracks.

Travel Tips for Hamburg

The Hamburg Water-carrier

by yooperprof

The Water-carrier Hans Hummel is a widely-used symbol of Hamburg.

A few years ago the city had one of those "artistic celebations" wherein different individuals and organizations painted a set object with different designs and color schemes. Hamburg used the Hans Hummel as its object, so you will see brightly colored men with buckets in different locations.

This swanly version of Hummel is at the Hauptbahnhof.

(The original Hans Hummel lived in the early 1800s, and was actually named Johann Wilhelm Bentz. He is said to have worked than any man before him shuffling around Hamburg with his burden. Children of the city mocked him by calling him "bumble-bee" - Hummel, in German.)

Remainder Books, Cards, and Recordings

by yooperprof about Zweitausendeins

This remainder bookstore is a good place to find bargains in (and out) of print, as well as a good selection of inexpensive music (and books) on disc.

The name means "2001" - the connection will have to be explained to me some time!

If you're coming to Hamburg...

by CubsIn4

If you're coming to Hamburg from another city in Europe, I'd recommend you take the train unless you're in a hurry. If you aren't from Europe you're gonna have to fly.
Hamburg's public transportation system is very good, and you can get pretty much everywhere you need to go if you rely on it. Having a car isn't very practical; in fact, many Hamburgers don't drive as they have no need for it. It's also a great city for walking, which allows you to see more than any other option would. If you feel like biking, bike paths run alongside the sidewalks and are a very common way to get around.

Acclaimed Films In English (With Subtitles!)

by ericaj.

Very popular amongst film buffs and the University set, the ABATON Theatre offers several English speaking films each month with German subtitles. They do not present the standard Hollywood blockbuster fare, rather than take their cues from smaller movies that garner critical buzz from the prestigious film festivals in Cannes, Venice, Sundance and Berlin. Though it's true some of these films go on to reach wider international audiences, and often gain Oscar recognition, the Abaton usually has an uncanny ability for picking out the critical darlings, from dramas to documentaries, long before Academy Award season starts in Hollywood.

The Theatre doesen't offer traditional eats like popcorn- rather than nuts, homemade cookies, cappacuino, soda, and wine in their small lobby bar. They also have a bistro that's a popular gathering place for intellectual types to come and flirt over sparkling wine (sekt), and international cuisine.

He finally noticed me

by alza

I think the guy was just a loner, normal and all but not used to having a real live woman sitting beside him. We might have gotten in touch, but I did have my friend Ulrike there, didn't want to let her hang or anything.
You might think my legs are rather white, well they are. I never go for a tan. One way to look young forever, they say. But on that waterfront, a few men remarked upon my 'white legs', like it was a curse or something. haha. Probably Germans who spend their winters in Majorca! well go for it you guys! If you look like you're 95 when you're 60, don't blame me! I was in Majorca before, but I still want to stay white. I don't care if I never tan. There!
