Giant Airbus 380 in Hamburg on Saturday, but where exactly??

by jminer

Hi everybody!

This is awfully late, we're leaving tomorrow morning for Germany (Berlin, to be exact), but I'll give it a try :-)

I read today that the new Airbus will be in Hamburg for a show on Saturday, however I can't find any info where and when. Any help? How do we get from Berlin to Hamburg and where is the Airbus plant, is it far outside the town?

Thanks a lot!
Jay

IF you are driving to Hamburg take the A24 to the A1 and exit Harburg/Neuland, its the exit after HH-Wilhelmsburg Süd and before the Maschner Kruez. If you go to the Kreuz you have gone too far. Once you exit Harburg/Neuland follow the signs to the B-73. Follow the B-73 towards Cuxhaven. You'll pass the A-7 in HH-Heimfeld. Right after that you will want to make a right onto Waltershofer Str. Keep following that it it will take you into HH-Finkenwerder. Keep on the main street until it turns into Nessdeich and look for the signs.

The plane flies at Saturday around 3 pm very low over the Airbus plant in Hamburg-Finkenwerder. It does however not land there!

DB timetable

The DB timetable does know all public transport stops in Germany, thus can can e.g. give "Teufelsbrück, Hamburg" as destination (without umlaut: Teufelsbrueck, Hamburg).

Berlin to Hamburg is 90 minutes by ICE high speed trains.
It is not really far outside the town, but you need bus or ferry to reach the mentioned places.
The ferries to Teufelsbrück and Bubendey-Ufer are covered by a local public transport ticket. Tricky are the express buses (e.g. line 36 to Teufelsbrück) in Hamburg, as you need a supplement for them. A day ticket on a Saturday for Hamburg is EUR 4,65 (incl. 1st class trains and express buses: EUR 5,75). The mini-group version for 2-5 persons is EUR 7,75 (8,85).

Travel Tips for Hamburg

China Time

by nepalgoods

There had been a big China event in 2006: China Time! A market with Chinese products was build up on Jungefrnstieg. There have been many musical, social and political events with "China" a theme in Hamburg in September 2006. This year (2007) there is a China Market and next year will be again a big China Time! It is a very colorful event with lots of fun but also serious congresse, which all want to intensify the relationship between Hamburg and china. Hamburg has the biggest Chinese community in Germany, hundreds of Chinese businesses. The partner-town is Shanghai. And as I am working for a touroperator organising tours to China, I am specially intersted in everything Chinese in Hamburg. China Tours will also be on the China Market.

Frank und Frei

by barryg23

Frank und Frei is a popular kneipe in the Schanzenviertel. Like Oma's Apotheke next door, it's a regular place with the local students. We tried two beers here, Jever Pils and Einbecher Maiboch. We would have stayed for dinner too but couldn't miss out on going to Oma's.

The Schanzenviertel is, in general, very good for nightlife. We passed some great looking pubs, bars and restaurants and I'd have loved a few extra days in Hamburg to visit more of them.

In the port of Hamburg - close to the place where Feuerschiff is docked, you have the possibility to book a flight over the city of Hamburg in a small water-plane - see my picture !
These flights will take about 45 minutes and you will mostly explore the area above Binnen-Alster and Ausssen-Alster.

Exploring Hamburg's waterways

by aukahkay

Exploring Hamburg's waterways is a good way of seeing the city. With a myriad of canals and bridges, the city is full of surprises - from cafes and restaurants to boutiques. Eventually, I end up at the Binnenalster lake and the Town Hall.

Townhall

by tini58de

Hamburg’s Town Hall is the seat of the city senate and the municipality of Hamburg and has 647 rooms! It is a wonderful sandstone builduing in neo-Renaissance style and was built at the end of the 19th century.

The new Rathaus was inaugurated in 1897. A very interesting fact is, that it stands on over 4000 oak posts! The ground is just too swampy to hold such an impressive building without those posts.

Above the main entrance you can find a sentence in Latin which translated reads: “May the descendants seek to uphold the freedom which was won by our forefathers.”

The grand banquet hall in the Rathaus is very impressive! It is 46 m long, 18 m wide and 15 m high. Five huge paintings show the history of Hamburg from 800 to 1900, 62 coats of arms of the cities of the ancient Hanseatic league are on the walls. The three chandeliers each with 278 bulbs weigh 1500 kilos a piece!

Try to have a guided tour through the Rathaus - it is worthwhile!
