I initially wrote this tip some years ago, having just returned from a weekend in Hamburg with my ex-girlfriend. Apologies for the photo. I cannot even remember now what it was taken on but it is not great I know.
The hotel is run by some very friendly Afghani people, very conveniently located for transport links. It is about 300 yards to Hauptbanhof Sud (main train station) and slightly closer to the ZOB (bus station). A fifteen minute walk will take you into the main shopping district..
The rooms are basic but spotlessly clean, ours had obviously been recently refurbished. The en-suite bathroom had one of the most powerful showers I have ever experienced - it was great.
there is satellite TV
in the rooms, including CNN News in English if you need to keep up with events.
A typical continental buffet breakfast is included in the price.
The hotel itself is in one of the "red light" districts, but my girlfriend walked about by herself and did not feel at all threatened, although some travellers may find the ambience of the area off-putting.
I would definitely recommend this hotel.
Unique Quality: There are no really outstanding features, just a good cheap place to spend a few days.
Directions: From the bus station (ZOB) walk across the road in front, Steindamm is on the right and the Hotel about 50 yards on the left .
From the train station (Hauptbanhof Sud), cross over Kirchenallee, walk straight on and the Hotel is just on the left
