Trains from Hamburg to Odense, Denmark

by keo123

I am flying into Hamburg Airport and am planning to take a train to Odense, Denmark.

I need advise on how to buy a return train ticket. Does anyone know which website I can use to book a ticket and how do I get from the Airport to the train station? How long would this journey take?

Also, I need to find out train timetables please.

Many thanks for this. The train fares are quite pricey. So now we will compare prices between buses and planes.

What about booking for buses and planes between Hamburg and Odense, Denmark?

Please let me know of some suitable website/s.

It looks like you can get a ticket Hamburg Odense for as low as 29 € at Bahn.de (the German state railroads). The site is very easy to use.

The Danish bus company Abildskou has connections between Hamburg airport and Århus in Denmark. I think you can get of in Vejle and change to a Danish regional train.

Good luck!

... About planes. I doubt there is any connection between Hamburg and Odense. Since Odense is less that 1.5 hour by train from Copenhagen Airport the local airport is very small and hardly serves any routes.

The site for the Hamburg Airport is: http://www.airport.de/index_en.phtml. Click on "Ground Transport" for links for bus, subway and suburban rail from the airport to the train station. To look at the rail connections: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de (switch language to English). Gary

It's a bit cheesy but it's possible to travel by rail for 29 Euro - you will need to change trains but there are 3 connections daily with 29 Euro Internet special and one extra departing Hamburg in an ungodly hour (03:10 AM).

You will need to reserve tickets in advance on german rail web site and they will send you the tickets for free from Germany. Otherwise the regular tickets are indeed expensive.

If you already have your airplane tickets don't wait longer for the train - it will take ca. a week to get them in the mail. You also can print them out, but I prefer to get the "real" ticket.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Hamburg Airport
From: Hamburg Hbf
To: Odense st

To get the EUR 29,00 special tickets you have to query from "Hamburg Hbf" as otherwise they won't be shown.

Fastest connection from Hamburg Airport to Hamburg Hbf is the Jasper Airport Express. Single ticket is EUR 5,00. The DB timetable has these buses as option from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof (Hbf - the main railway station).

Travel Tips for Hamburg

Rathausmarkt

by alza

I finally made it to Rathausmarkt after walking all over the place from University to the boats to the water. A charming place, with palm trees. Couldn't believe it! I thought this was a northern city!

The Rathaus is impressive and I read that it's Neo-Renaissance style. Yep, that's what it looks like. What I loved most is how people here go about their lives, quietly and happily, no one bothers you or screams at you, or gets overly excited over trivia. You're free to look around you and observe but it's all quite relaxed. There is a northern atmosphere to it all, yet it's not at all cold. You can feel good here.

Lots of good food and beer all around too. Those white tents in front of the Rathaus were so white and clean, they impressed me. Even if I felt at first that the Rathaus facade should be left unencumbered. Everyone there was having a good time so that's fine. After all, a city is for its people. So I liked it. :-) the people

Day Trips

Here are some websites to some places that are worth a visit if you have more time in Hamburg:

Lüneburg is a cute city close to Hamburg with lots of framework houses, also a natural resort with heathland:
Official website of the city: www.lueneburg.de
Website of the whole area: www.lueneburger-heide.de

The city of Lübeck is world cultural heritage and famous for its marzipan and x-mas market - so also a good tip for the December time;-)
Marzipan, Thomas Mann, Kultur, Holstentor, Unesco-Weltkulturerbe – das sind die Begriffe, die vielen zuerst zu Lübeck einfallen. It almost 215.000 inhabitants. From here you also can go the the Eas Sea coast.
Official website of the city: www.luebeck.de

The "Altes Land" (>old land) is famous for the huge fruit plantages. The Elbe river is close and a tour with a bicycle is perfect, lots of farm that sell fruit and vegetable, lots of framework houses and some thatched roofs.

Bremen is also possible in a one day trip - although Bremen has to offer more than that.

A nice gay bar and disco in St. Pauli

by shellseeker about Wunderbar

Weekdays it is a cosy and fancy bar, weekends Dance Club with music of the 70s, 80s and Charts. A must! And in the middle of St.Pauli - another gay centre - just a few steps away from the 'Reeperbahn', Hamburg's infamous red light district. casual party crowd, every look is allowed!!!

One of many, but nice food.

by planxty about Sofram retaurant, Steindamm

In the area East of the Hauptbanhof (station) known as St. Georg, there are a plethora of Turkish restaurants. there are also a few Afghani, Iranian and a few other cuisines.

One i tried, which seemed good , was the Sofram @ Steindamm 5.

It is unpretentious, with formica tables etc. but the staff are friendly and the food reasonably priced and tasty. It has the added advantage of staying open until 6 in the morning (at the weekends anyway).

Somewhat surprisingly, they don't actually do Turkish coffee, which I found a bit strange, but that's only a small quibble. The beef and potato stew (don't know the Turkish name) is very filling and tasty and the lahmacun (Turkish pizza) is also good.

For a sweet, the baklava is excellent.

Beautiful Town Hall

by Bushman23

This is one of the few Rathaus's i entered while in Germany, but it is by far the most impressive. The market square outside sets the tone, and when you enter its as if you walking back in time. The architecture is amazing, with rows of columns supporting a high curved roof, and gothic-looking doors at either end. Built in 1900, the design is a mix of Rennaissance, Baroque & Classical architecture. There are several displays in the main hall, giving a history of Hamburg and the Rathaus. Entrance is free, which is also quite a bonus!
