Stag do!

by Griff8

Heading to Hamburg for a stag party. There will be around 15-20 of us, staying in Hamburg between 30th May to 2nd June 2006.

Are there any particular hotels, youth hostels etc. which are fairly tolerant of stag parties?

Will we have problems, being a group of English men in Germany the week before the world cup starts?

Any suggests on activities to do during the day? Don't want to drink all day long if we can help it!

Rough guide for prices of beers and eating out would be nice too!

Thanks.

Try www.kogge-hamburg.com or www.instantsleep.de for hostels. You'll also find cheap (run-down) hotels in the Reeperbahn area just by walking around.

I don't think you'll get into any trouble just because you're English! Just don't forget that a lot more people than you think will be able to understand you ... even when you're wasted! ;)

If you want to pass a few hours in the daytime go to Landungsbrücken and check out the viewpoint right on top of the subway station (just walk up all the stairs you can find)... then cross the "Alter Elbtunnel" right below you to get to the other side of the river.
Also you could take boat #62 to "Finkenwerder" and get off at the Övelgönne / Museumshafen station... keep on walking west along the beach for a bit.

Most importantly, check out fishmarket sunday morning between 5 and 9 am ... this should be experienced right after a long night of drinking on Reeperbahn!

Prices in general are much lower compared to the UK...

Have fun!

Travel Tips for Hamburg

There is a system to it!

by tini58de

German license plates are fun to read:
the first letters are an abbreviation of the city or area, where the car comes from, the other letters and numbers are just to identify it.
.
HH is short for Hansestadt Hamburg, but you will also find some other rather common license plates in Hamburg:
.
HH = Hamburg
PI = Pinneberg
SE = Bad Segeberg
ROW = Rotenburg/Wümme
HL= Lübeck
OD= Oldesloe
.
well, I could go on for hours and hours, but you might like to find out yourself!

'Blankenese' -
is the name of...

by shellseeker

'Blankenese' -
is the name of this famous village in the outskirts to the west of Hamburg at the northern river bank of the Elbe River. It used to be a poor fishing village, a long time ago, and now is one of the top addresses to live in Hamburg. The mainly white buildings are cuddling up to the soft green hills.
There are no real streets between the classy houses but mainly stairs up and stairs down offering fantastic views of the Elbe and the houses.
At the river bank there is a very popular path to stroll along on a sunny afternoon, to show off with the new cabriolet or just to walk the brandnew Gucci outfit bought on “Neuer Wall”. The nicest walk is up the river (in direction to the center) to “Övelgönne”.

JASPER Airport Shuttle: Only 5 Euro!

by ericaj.

If you find that you'll be traveling to Hamburg with a lot of extras (luggage, kids, seniors, and so on), it might be better to take a taxi into the city just for comfort's sake.

However, if you're feeling spry and traveling relatively light, the Jasper Airport shuttle can transport you to the city center for 5 Euro per serson. You're dropped off directly in front of the Central Train Station (Haupbanhof), on Kirchenallee. The fare from Kirchenalle/Central Station to the Airport is 8 Euro.

Jasper Shuttles depart from the Airport into the city every 20 minutes, from 5:45 am - 11:30 pm

The Kirchenalle/Central Station trip to the Airport departs every 20 minutes, from 4:40 am- 9 pm

Travel time for each trip is about 20 minutes.

Before departing for the airport the driver will ask you which terminal your plane departure is from. Call your airline beforehand to find out, so your driver knows where to drop you off and you don't miss your plane back home.

Miniatur Wunderland

by wsw24

The "Miniaturwunderland" is a tremendous "museum" with miniature trains in different scenarios.
The grade of detail is very high and precise. Everything is moving, even they have autonomous cars etc. moving within the scenes.
It is getting bigger and bigger every year. Everytime you drop in you will discover new details and features.
On some days there might be so much people waiting for entrance that it can take up to more than 45 mins.
You will get a rough overview and also information on waiting times on their web page.

City Hall

by Sjalen

Hamburg City Hall makes no exception to the general rule that German town halls are superb. It was ready in 1897 after the previous 13th century one in the same place was destroyed in the great 1842 fire. The neo-renaissance outside gives way to all sorts of architecture once you are inside and you can visit it daily.
