Public transport in Hamburg

by Danny1974

I've booked myself in to a hotel on the outskirts of the city and am trying to find out about the bus train network for Greater Hamburg.

Can anyone give me a useful links to the bus and rail network for the city?

www.hvv.de - Hamburg transit website (in German and English)

Getting round Hamburg is reasonably easy even from the outskirts. The city has a safe and efficient U-bahn subway/elevated rail and S-bahn (Urban commuter rail) system, and a harbour ferry system (interesting, as not many western cities still have these) along with the usual buses (good) and taxis (average). Trams no longer run. Most transit runs up until around 11.30pm, though after that there is a nightbus system and on weekends (FRI and SAT nights) some parts of the rail system also operate through the night, though not all areas are served. There's a nightbus network map on HVV website ot check if your area is covered.

Travel Tips for Hamburg

Harry's Hafenbasar

by globetrott

Harry's Hafenbasar is a mixture of a museum and a shop and in fact you have at first to pay an entrance-fee of 2,50 euros, that will be deducted twice, when you buy something. Obviously the owner had a lot of problems with tourists just browsing instead of buying anything.
The collection of the basar started with the souvenirs that were taken home by the sailors from overseas, who needed some money for the expensive shore-leave at the Reeperbahn...
The basar is at the corner of Balduinstraße & Erichstraße 56
just about 100 meters behind the colorful houses of Hafenstrasse
Harry's Hafenbasar is open for visitors :
Sunday till Thusday 12.00 noon - 10.00p.m.
Friday+Saturday: 12.00 noon till midnight
and upon appointment !

Wine and Shoes: The Best of Italy in One Shop

by ericaj. about Scarpovino

In a rather unusual but quaint combination, Scarpovino is a casual shop in St. Pauli's ultra edgy and bohemian "Schanze" neighborhood that offers Italian fine wines and gourmet nibbles, right alongside finely crafted Italian shoes for men and women. Pick up that new pair of Italian shoes for the office, sandals for the summer, or boots for the winter. While there you can also grab a fantastic bottle of Tuscan red and gourmet snacks to share with friends after your shopping day is done. Shoes average about 70-150 Euro. Wine and aperatif liquors range from Euro 2,90 - Euro 290

Getting around

by Leipzig

At the Landungsbruecken you can make aboat tour. Choose one of the little boats. They usually charge you the same amount for admission. I had to pay 9.00 Euro. The routes of the different companies are almost the same; a round trip through the harbour district and the Warehouse District.
Don't enter the yellow boats - these are ferries to bring you to the Musical "King of Lions".

The Alster Lakes

by Mariajoy

As my hotel was very near the two lakes of Hamburg, the Binnen(inner)Alster and the Aussen(outer)Alster, it was a pleasant walk in the springtime, even if it was a bit chilly and grey when I visited. From here it is possible to take a trip with the various boat tour companies.

Alster

by Dexters

You really can't miss it! But you should also visit the bigger part of the Alster (Aussenalster). You will find small parks and quite a lot of people jogging. While you are there you should rent a boat or canoe and explore the canals.
