Wonderful private accommodations within a warm spirited family home. Although the owner says her English is not good, she is only being humble. We had no language barrier and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this home. I fell in love with German coffee here on my first full day in Germany. Do yourself a favour and stay here.

Sababurg, Germany: Sleeping Beauty's Castle (Rose Briar Castle)

  • One of the castles turrets - Germany

A sweeping, tree canopied drive through the forest is the beginning of ones drive along the picturesque countryside and quaint towns bringing you to Sleeping Beauty's Castle, nestled in quiet isolation. The castle is separated into 2 different sections. The first being the hotel/restaurant and the latter being in ruins. The castle is surrounded with parkland and a small zoological area of its own. After climbing the 92 steps up to the top of the turret (Sleeping Beauty's room) we were treated to a canopy bed, sitting area and spacious white tiled bathroom. We made our way toward the outdoor performance area where we watched a rendition of Sleeping Beauty in the ruins of the castle. A walk around the castle provided us with a view of the surrounding land which ended in the rose garden. The staff are courteous, punctual and friendly. As a part of our accommodation price, we were served a candlelight dinner in front of the floor to ceiling fireplace and watched the sunset across the adjacent wall to wall windows. A single weather beaten tree in the yard was illuminated against the shadows of the night and the staff advised that wolves were known to howl throughout the sleeping hours. I was indeed in paradise. Our first drink of the evening was a "fairy drink" and although I am aware that it consisted of wine and gin, I think perhaps there was more to it. It was indeed potent but delicious in small sips, served in a pewter cup and chilled . The 3 appetizers were duck liver, bacon of boar and a cream of broccoli soup. Our main entree consisted of beef and vegetables and no room for dessert. Although I can't say that I enjoyed the meal, I would definitely rank this hotel as one to always remember and treasure. It is a small wonder that the Grimm Brothers used this location for a fairy tale of their own. I could even imagine Red Riding Hood scampering across the country road as we drove in.

    * The only problem we encountered was the ability to book online. I had tried several times to email the establishment and was only able to get reservations because of a family friend who lives in Germany that phoned them personally. If dropping in to obtain a room I suggest getting there early (well before dark) in case there are no vacancies. Its a long distance between a town with accommodations and driving at night could be confusing and frought with wrong turns.

Would definitely recommend this hotel based on the staff alone. Courteous, friendly and very helpful while staying in the area. Dinner in the adjoining restaurant was wonderful. From the nice selection of wines to my first taste of genuine sauerkraut, it was superb. The owners daughter spoke at length with us about our trip and made us feel at home during our stay. Her mom was the proprietor of the gift shop which truly makes this the well rounded establishment. The atmosphere at night was very quiet as the whole town seems to shut down. Our room was average but the view of Neuschwanstein castle from the balcony made the more than average price well worth it. Stay here, relax and enjoy.

Excellent accommodations. From the heartfelt welcome in the parking lot to the last goodbyes the following morning. Great tips on where to eat and what to see in the area. Perfect location. During an anniversary trip to Europe my wife made only one request, a night in a castle. After much searching I found this fairy tale location in the town of Meiningen. We were not disappointed as our tower room, with its canopy bed, offered views from the windows that matched the views inside. Not a huge sprawling estate, the castle offered an intimacy that was very appealing given the surroundings. The breadfast was one of the best we had in Europe, sorry we didn't eat any other meals as we enjoyed our stay in Meiningen by indulging in many of the other offerings.

It's a fairy tale castle high on a hill, what more needs to be said?

These are simple serviced apartments, very close to the Frankfurter Messe Hall. If you're looking for value and a good location, give Frau Ingrid Faber a call. :)

BTW, the place is a little weird to find for cab drivers, just a bit off a motorway. So, print the following description, written in German. Give it to your cabbie. :)

    Wegbeschreibung:

Nice little kitchen, two twin beds, a small table...
All necessary kitchen appliances and aids, along with silverware and basics like sugar, coffee, tea, tea. And, less than 1/2 a block away is a small market. Larger stores are about three bus stops towards Rödelheim.

For booking, contact the manager, Ingrid Faber. Her email addy is fabermicki@aol.com. If you write in English, keep it simple. Ingrid only knows a bit of English.

Hotel Uhl: Great little hotel in Rothenburg
  • Satisfaction:
  • By dorigo on October 12, 2007
  • Have you ever had a hotel staff waiting for you when you arrive, well that is what happened to me in Rothenburg Germany. We were running late so we called the hotel to make sure they were saving our rooms and they informed us that the room would be there when we arrived. They told us that we were approximately 1 hour from there location. When we arrived the hotel staff was outside waiting for us. That was a first for me. It is a very nice hotel and cafe. I highly recommend the Hotel Uhl. It is a little bit hard to find and I recommend a GPS when driving in Germany. We enjoyed our stay in Rothenburg.

I highly recommend this Hotel because of its location.
