The "Giant Rider" is an ancient Roman sculpture, made in the 1st or 2nd century A.D., that was found near Haueneberstein in 1911. This one is a copy, the original is now in the Stadtmuseum.
A narrow passage through the house next to the ice-cream shop in Lange Straße leads to a hidden courtyard where the sculpture is put up. From here, a stairway leads up the hill to the Baldreit.
The magnificent ruin is visible from far away. Castle Hohenbaden, also named the Old Palace (Altes Schloss), was the first castle of the Marggraves, after which they named themselves "von Baden".
After the new palace in town was built in the 16th century, the castle was abandoned and fell to ruins. According to its historical importance, however, it has been saved and partly reconstructed. Admission is free.
The hike up, starting from Neues Schloss (New Palace), is a mere 3 kms, but rather steep uphill. The walk took me about 45 minutes. Your reward will be an amazing view of Baden-Baden, the Northern Black Forest, and the Rhine plain over to Vosges and Palatine Forest.
See my travelogue page on Hohenbaden for more photos.
On the slopes between the Rhine plains and the Black Forest sits a beautiful Spa town which is steeped in history and offers its visitors amazing hospitality.
Baden-Baden has a long tradition of treating its guests like royalty. The art of being pampered here dates back to Roman times. Even Europe's first luxury hotel was etablished on the banks of the river Oos. Nowadays thankfully there are hotels to suit all budgets.
Baden-Baden is also famous for its magnificent casino.
Form morning until night there is always something on offer here. Good theatre, spas, historic relics like the Roman Baths and also the beautiful gardens in the centre of the town. Good restaurants are plentiful here too.
The well kept pedestrian area of the town is a great place to wander around and take a drink in one of the cafes.
The Gönneranlage is situated on the Lichtenthaler Allee halfway between the town centre and Lichtenthal abbey. The park is an important example of the geometric style in gardening at the beginning of the 19th century. The garden was designed by Max Laeuger in 1909. A donation by the "coffee king" Hermann Sielcken, a rich businessman, paid for the new park on the right bank of the river Oos which was named after the former mayor of Baden-Baden. Originally a hedge garden, it has been planted with roses since 1952.
The Josefinenbrücke, a pedestrian brigde named after the donator's wife, leads from the river promenade to the main gate with the two stags.
Chairs and benches, sunny and shady spots invite for a rest during the long walk to Lichtenthal.
The garden is most beautiful in early summer when the roses are in bloom.

The axis of the bridge, gate and central parterre leads to the monumental Josefinenbrunnen .
