The collector Frieder Burda dedicated his collection of classical modern and contemporary art to the public. The new museum, designed by the architect Richard Meier, was inaugurated in 2004. In addition to the permanent collection the museum shows temorary exhibitions - check what's on. And expect the place to be crowded.
The Lichtenthaler Allee is a green strip along the river Oos, one of the noblest areas in Baden-Baden. Some 350 years ago it was only a dirt road along the river, now it is a park with old oak trees, fountains, museums and a top address for some fancy hotels! A beautiful park to stroll along and relax!
Baden-Baden is about a 40 minute S-Bahn ride from Karlsruhe's main train station. You can get an all day pass to ride this train for a small price. Just remember that if you do take the train, you really cannot walk to the actual town center. I assumed that you could and it was one long walk! But it was a beautiful one.
Baden-Baden has to be one of the most elegant cities I have ever seen. It appears to have been built as a resort for the very wealthy and there is a lot to see, especially the Rose Garden.
The beautiful alley and park along the Oos river invite for a long walk (or, if you prefer, a bike tour) in the footsteps of the Rich and the Beautiful, the Famous and the Wannabe Important. Baden-Baden's glorious past as summer capital of Europe a century ago has left its marks. You'll spot palace-like hotels, splendid villas, lovely parks, exotic trees, and people worth watching. After 3 kms the alleyway ends at the monastery of Lichtenthal.
Brenner's Parkhotel is the No. 1 address in Baden-Baden. Find someone who pays...
Along the alleyway
Halfway along there is the Gönneranlage, a garden in geometric style designed in the early 1900s. Most beautiful when the many, many roses are in bloom.
Gönnerbrücke - one of many pedestrians' bridges across the river with lace-like iron balustrades.
Hotel Bellevue and the Parkcafé, a lovely spot to stop for a coffee - again, depending who pays.
This giant rose is 'growing' in the private park of a villa along the alley.
Villa Biron aka Villa Eden, built 1857-1858 in the style of French palaces - nowadays owned by the chamber of industry and commerce, used for meetings, conferences and seminars.
