Travel Tips for Baden-Baden

Altes Dampfbad

by Nelie

This house is built on the hot springs and was formerly used as a steam bath. But now it is renovated and it is a kind of gallery. The Gesellschaft der Freunde junger Kunst organises different exhibitions and promotes young artist.

For the current exhibition please see the organisation's web site.

Friedrichsbad

by Kathrin_E

One of the two big public spas in town, situated in a beautiful 19th century building. Following the example of the ancient Romans, the bath has a fixed curriculum which takes about 2-3 hours.

No need to bring towels and stuff, everything is provided.

Friedrichsbad is entirely nude. Sexes are separated except in the big pool at the end.
If you mind, better go to Caracallatherme instead.

Merkurberg Funicular

by Kathrin_E

Climbing Merkurberg can be done easily by funicular. It runs every 8-15 minutes depending on demand. Return fare is 4 €. You can buy tickets either from the souvenir shop in the station or from a ticket machine. KVV tickets are not valid on the funicular.

The funicular is remarkably steep, 54% in the top part of the line.

To reach the bottom station of the funicular, take bus 204 or 205 from the town centre, 205 also runs to/from the train station. Each of them runs only once per hour, so check the timetables in advance.

New Palace to Augustusplatz

by Russell_the_Wombat

The best about the New Palace is the terrace next to it. From here you have the best view of the old town, the spas and the Oos valley.

The steeple of the church is hardly higher than the terrace, and lower than the palace above us.

In the background we see the surrounding hills of the Black Forest.

Only a small bit of the palace is visible from the terrace. The rest is behind high walls.

The cypresses add a little bit of Toscana flair to this spot.

One step lower on the hillside there is another building which has been closed down, the interiior sold, and no one knows what will become of it. This is the former Convent of the Holy Sepulchre, a nunnery.

The church is closed, too.

This palace next to the two big spas has recently been restored and extended and turned into a new upscale hotel.

Augustusplatz is a big square in the town centre where many bus lines meet. Away from the bus traffic hub it has a park with a pond and a big fountain.
