Best Western – Hotel am Münster
by brendareed
For our stay in Breisach, we stayed at the Hotel am Münster, which is now part of the Best Western chain. It is in a perfect location on top of the hill and right next to the cathedral with views overlooking the Rhein River. As a plus, and the primary reason we chose this hotel, was its close proximity to Breisach am Rhein's sister city just a few miles away, France's Neuf-Brisach.
The hotel was easy to find – simply keep heading up the hill towards the cathedral; but also because there are plenty of signs as we drove through the town (okay, and we had a GPS too). As we drove up the narrow cobblestone road towards the hotel, we went slowly so we could enjoy the ride and to give walked time to get out of our path. We went through two narrow gates designed for one way at a time and up the hill. At the top of the hill the cathedral was on the right and the hotel was on the left with a foot bridge connecting the two buildings.
Parking was quite easy – and free. The Rathaus (Town Hall) was across the street and offered a large parking lot, which is where we parked since the hotel spaces had filled up. The hotel also offers an underground parking lot for a fee if there are absolutely no street spaces available.
Check-in was a breeze, the staff being extremely friendly and efficient. Our room was ready and we were given a nonsmoking room with a king bed. The breakfast buffet in the dining room overlooking the Rhein came with the room as well as free wi-fi. Our room was €85 for the night, which was decent given that it was a holiday.
We picked up a local map from the front desk and they were more than helpful about directing us to some local highlights to visit. Later, we returned to the hotel for dinner in their restaurant (it was Easter Monday and many places were closed). The food was very good and the prices were reasonable. Hubby had a Flammkuchen, the flat pizza like dish popular in the Alsace region, while I had a large salad.
The room was comfortable and very quiet – really too quiet if that can actually happen.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Hotel am Münster and wouldn’t hesitate to return or to recommend it to someone else. It was a very good experience.

Historical River and Border town

"Old City"
Breisach is a town with centuries of history, much of it fortunately available for the tourist to enjoy. The town is impressive to see from the distance; the old, upper town rises up steeply from the plains of the Rhine River, with the spires of the cathedral visible from far away.
From the lower town you can walk (or drive) to the upper town to see the cathedral and the old town. Walking along the cobblestones makes you get a little of a feel of what it was like for the people for hundreds of years.
