My trip to Feldberg was a two-day trip. On Friday night (after work), I drove 5 hours to the city of Freiburg. I stayed in the Freiburg Novotel, which is in the heart of the city. The advantage is that it is open 24 hours a day, so you can arrive late and leave early. There is a car park besides/underneath the hotel. Rooms are pretty okay, with private facilities. On Saturday, I got up at 7 am. From Freiburg, it is a 45 minutes drive to the Feldberg, so it is not difficult to catch the first lift at 9 am.
There are also some hotels at the Feldberg (not on the top, but along both sides of the road that runs trought the ski area). They are definitely more attractive than the Freiburg Novotel, but I found it safer (after a normal working day in the office and a 5-hour trip) not to drive up the mountain late at night.
If you plan a usual ski trip (not like me) I would definitely recommend staying at the Feldberg, e.g. in the Feldberger Hof.
