Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte
by globetrott
Freiburg and the nearby Schwarzwald / Black Forest is certainly the best place to taste Schwarzwaelder Kirsch-Torte ! This famous cake is made of several layers of chocolate-cake, filled with whipped cream that has cherries in it. Depending on the recipee - there are 7 different official recepees - these cherries might be soacked in cherry-brandy, or the cake-layers might be soaked by cherrybrandy, or both of them. In any case the name indicates that Kirsch-Schnaps (cherry-brandy) is used for the cake, if it would be just a Cherry-cake, it would be called Schwarzwaelder KirschEN-Torte.
Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte is quite heavy and full of calories and mostly it is also much higher than an ordinary cake would be.
My favorite place for this sort of cake is in Hinterzarten, but in Freiburg you will get it as well !
the typical Schwarzwald-house
by globetrott
You will see the typical houses of Black Forest / Schwarzwald mainly in the outskirts of Freiburg and in the nearby villages : These extra-high roofs are typical for the Schwarzwald-houses, and they made sense because the winters used to be strong and the snow would slide down easyly. Another quite interesting detail are the balconies that run around the houses, mostly totally covered by the overhanging roofs of the building.
On my 4th picture you can see the typical kind of Schwarzwald-facade : thin pieces of wood, fixed like shindles.
Forget Disney Land!!
by suubi
Forget Disney land, come on and experience Germany's biggest leisure park lying just 15 minutes away from Freiburg.
You'll find a fascinating world, full of illusion, excitement, magic, dance and acrobatics. Artists from all over the world offer you an unforgettable visit with their breath taking shows.
Nothing is as easy as getting there, Europa Park is connected with the BAB5. To get there just look for the junction Rust (57b) between Ettenheim (57a) and the Herbolzheim (58).

Mittelalterliches Foltermuseum - closed forever !
by globetrott
There used to be a medieval torture-museum / Mittelalterliches Foltermuseum at Muensterplatz, opposite of the cathedral. End of 2006 the museum was closed forever and the exhibits were taken to another place, so it does not make sense to search for it in Freiburg anymore ! This museum is mentioned in other Freiburg-tips on VT, so I thought it is best to inform you about its end.
