Hand made jam in the black forest

by ssweetest

Hi,
I will visit Freiburg in the 1st week of Dec. for 4 days. I read about this Hand made jam place in the black forest, and I want to know how to reach it and how far is it from Freiburg or any information about it.
the address is Konfitürenmanufaktur, Alfred Faller GmbH, Seeweg 3• 79694 Utzenfeld/Schwarzwald.
one more question, does anyone know a cheese factory in this area? I love visiting factories and buying products fresh from the factory :)
what is the best place to have black forest cake without alcohol ? I think its called 'econo' right ?
Thanx :)

Freiburg has an excellent producers market around the cathedral. Daily except on Sundays. It will be no problem to find there hand made jam direct from the producer. Same with cheese.

"In Germany, however, only the traditional recipes with Kirschwasser are widespread, and other variants are very rare."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirschwasser
There exists artificial Kirschwasser flavor. It's used in cheap supermarket versions as real Kirschwasser is not cheap. Or with perfect flavor even expensive.

As long as the traditional recipe is used, i.e. not cherries preserved in alcohol, the end product is not considered alcoholic in Germany*). Due the low boiling temperature of alcohol and the high temperature in the oven not much alcohol is left. Only the Kirschwasser flavor.
*) This is the case if a product contains no more alcohol than e.g. apples if picked from the tree or fresh pressed apple juice.

I guess our friend ssweetest wants to have the cake absolutely alcolfree (=halal).
But when you google in German "black forest cake without alcohol" you only get 9 hits. when you google "black forest cake" (in English) + halal it is 5000 hits! I`m quite shure that also confectioners in Freiburg serve tourists from around the world with this speciality. Don`t hesitate to ask in one of the many pastry shops.

Travel Tips for Freiburg im Breisgau

by Sister_S

Go to downtown. Enjoy the atmosphere on the main shopping street (Kaiser-Joseph-Str.) with it's small rivers ('Bächle') and the street artists. Go to the Münster-Platz where you can visit the old cathetral. Enjoy the original sausages that you can get in front of the cathetral When I'm away from Freiburg I miss most the mixture of small city and nature. Everywhere in the city are small parks and greens. From the downtown you can go directly to the mountains. Within 5 minutes you stay in the blackforest (by foot!)

Fasnacht in Freiburg

by chancay

The carnaval traditions in the south of Germany are a bit different to the traditions in cities like Cologne, Düsseldorf or Mainz. Here they speak about Fasnacht, the events have more mythic backgrounds meanwhile the e.g. Cologne Carneval has especially political satire.

Hofgut Sternen - a place of history

by globetrott

Hofgut Sternen is a place of european history, it saw celebrities like Princess Marie Antoinette and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. You will find this old hotel in Breitnau, about halfway between Freiburg im Breisgau and Titisee, in a distance of 15km east of Freiburg.
In 1770 Hofgut Sternen was one of the places, where Marie Antoinette (the austrian princess and youngest daughter of empress Maria Theresia) had a rest and spent the night on her way to Paris. There she was supposed to meet her future husband, the 15 years old Ludwig - the later king Ludwig XVI. Marie Antoinette herself was just 14 years old at that time.
On top of the entrance to the hotel you may still see a painting commemorizing that special event and so you may get an idea, what such a royal carriage looked like.
You may as well see, that the hotel did not change a lot since that time and on the left of the picture you may also see the small church of St.Oswald.
Nowadays Hofgut Sternen is a modern hotel with a large parking, lots of souvenir-shops and the largest Coo-Coo-clock in the world !
___________________________
You can get to Hofgut Sternen by car, when driving through Hoellental (hell-valley) and passing by a village called "Himmelreich" (heaven)
or you take the train through Hoellental, a scenic ride, the station is about 5 minutes to walk from Hofgut

A SMALL VILLAGE

by Hosell

This is part of a small village located around Freiburg, also on Black Forest area.Really this is a nice and paceful place to be for a few days!.
Another nice place to see around if you have time enough,is go to see the Rhin Waterfalls, they are located at Schaffhausen just crossing the border with Switzerland and close to this region.I'll make a future page with some photos taken there aswell.

Hinterzarten - just 15 km east of Freiburg

by globetrott

Hinterzarten is one of the best-known resorts in the Black Forrest, with a famous ski-jump, plenty of traditional old hotels like Parkhotel Adler and it is just 15 km east of Freiburg im Breisgau.
When you click on my picture, you may see the catholic church of Hinterzarten behind the large meadow that is the very centre of the village, with plenty of hotels around it.
In the back you may see the ski-jump, Hinterzarten is the home of the Thoma-family - both the father and the son were famous ski-jumpers.

Hinterzarten is a great place for a vacation in summer or winter, even though my picture looks a bit sad...
