accomodation and trvel to freiburg

by indisas

WE ARE A COUPLE TRAVELLING FROM MONCHENGLADBACH TO FREIBURG.PL SUGGEST BEST MODE OF TRANSPORT.WE WOULD LIKE AN APRTMENT WITH COUNTRYSIDE VIEWS BUT EASILY ACCESSIBLE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN FREIBURG.WHAT IS THE BEST PUBLIC TRANSPORT SCHEME TO TRAVEL ON IN AND AROUND FREIBERG UPTO TITSEE AND TREIBERG ?

Re: accomodation and trvel to freiburg

The only alternatives are train or rental car. If you can buy the train tickets in advance you can get them for cheap, e.g. EUR 49,00 for 2 one-way. You can book at earliest 92 days in advance.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Moenchengladbach
To: Freiburg

Freiburg and Titisee are inside the RVF local public transport network.
network map Freiburg
http://www.rvf.de/PDF/Liniennetzplan-Freiburg.pdf
topographic map with public transport of the RVF
http://www.rvf.de/PDF/Liniennetzplan.pdf

A 24 hours mini group ticket for 1 zone (zone A) is EUR 9,00. A 24 hours mini group ticket for the whole RVG area (zones A+B+C) is EUR 18,00.

To Triberg you have to travel by train via Offenburg or Donaueschingen. Best deal for this is a Baden-Württemberg Ticket. EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons traveling together. Baden-Württemberg Ticket is valid
Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day
Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

RVF tickets and Baden-Württemberg Ticket are local public transport tickets. They cover all means of local public transport (regional trains, S-Bahn, trams and buses). Far distance trains like IC/EC or ICE are however not covered. To be on the safe side select at the DB timetable as means of transport "only local transport" if you plan trips on these tickets. This is in first place important for the Freiburg - Offenburg part, a relation served by regional trains and far distance trains.

Just a hint... when looking up train connections don't confuse "Freiburg" and "Freiberg". These are two different places at opposite ends of the country, solid 8 hours travel time apart.

Travel Tips for Freiburg im Breisgau

Views of Freiburg and the Black Forest

by Zandra

My favorite place in Freiburg is the Biergarten on top of the Schlossberg (castle hill). Next to the Schwabentor, there's a charming wooden pedestrian bridge leading over to the hill side. Just follow the small path up the mountain, or take the elevator at the end of the "cave tunnel", up to the Greiffenegg Schlössle restaurant, where you exit through the hallway of the restaurant. (Of course it's also possible to stay and have some drinks at the restaurant, but in the summer, it's definitely nicer to sit outside in the Biergarten). Order your drinks at the bar (when the weather is nice, it's usually crowded and it takes quite long until the waiter gets to you), and try to get a table at the very edge. From there you'll have beautiful panorama views of the part of town called 'Die Wiehre', and in the horizon the Black Forest. On the steep hillside, you'll also notice that they're growing wine.

For even better views of Freiburg and surroundings; pass the Biergarten and continue the path up until you reach the view platform.

Visit the restaurant's homepage to get an impression of the Schlossberg! http://www.greiffenegg.de When I studied in Freiburg, we used to visit the Biergarten quite often, to enjoy the sun, the view and chat away over a couple of beers...

Food Market

by german_eagle

The food market is the thing I probably liked most in Freiburg. Every weekday there is a huge market in front of the cathedral. Fresh and excellent vegetables, fruits, cheese, salami and ham, baguettes ... a paradise for every gourmet.

Streets in Vauban

by Nemorino

The zoning regulations in Vauban forbid the construction of free-standing one-family houses, because the intention is to create a viable urban neighborhood that is easily accessible by bicycle and public transport, not a suburban sprawl that would be dependent on automobile traffic.

Private ownership and development of the buildings is encouraged, however, so there is considerable variety in the appearance of the buildings.

Flückiger See - Lake only 30 mins from centre

by Loeffle

Want to go running, or just take a little walk and have some coffee, but not far away from centre?

Then this lake might be worth taking a closer look. It can be easily reached from town by taking Tram Line 1 (direction Landwasser - Stops: Am Bischofskreuz or Betzenhauser Torplatz) in less than ten minutes.

In the 80'es Flückiger See was the location of the regional garden exhibition and you can still see some of the projects today. Now the lake is generally a place for people to relax and having a good time. Especially on summer weekends it can be very crowded here, and you better choose another lake for your pleasure. I wouldn't recommend you to swim in this lake, even if Ökostation and the City of Freiburg (see link) do their best to increase the quality of water. But the meadows around the lake invite you to take a sunbath or do some spontanous barbecuing. There's also a cafe and restaurant and a location for small open air concerts. Once a year there's also a "Summer Night Party", check the date on http://www.freiburg.de
