Malls in Freiburg?
by Sojna
Hello, we' ll be in Freiburg next week and, since I am a little bit afraid of weather conditions, I would like to know if there are any big malls to spend some pleasant time, when it is too cold outside. We are not really shopping - maniacs, but we could give a look at toys, books, traditional products, or clothes. I know about the christmas market, of course, but I would like to have an alternative, in case of bad weather. Any other inside activity would be very appreciated, as well. Thanks a lot!

There's a small shopping mall called "Schwarzwald City" in downtown Freiburg (not far from the townhall if I remember correctly), but it is nothing to write home about.

I could be very wrong but i didn't notice any significant shopping malls in downtown Freiburg im Breisgau. there are department stores such as C & A and Galleries Kaufhaus (spelling?. You can also lose yourself in the Muenster for and hour or two if you are in to cathedrals.

"Significant" is an elastic word. Schwarzwald City is small (as mentioned before) but there is a roof, and it is warmer inside than outside.

Thanks everybody for your replies, but we did not fly to Freiburg, after all. Our flight was cancelled due to Air Traffic Control strike in the greek airports. What a disapointment! However, I hope I can reschedule our trip for March, or April. Which is the best month to visit Freiburg and the aerea? We are asking for a nice weather to walk around without freezing, but a little bit of snow up on the mountains would be very appreciated, as well. Is this too much to ask?

Mountains in the Black Forest region aren't high enough to see snow when you come in March or April. Perhaps the Schauinsland will still have some snow, but that would be it. I guess you'd have to take the train, or better yet: rent a car and take a trip to Lake Constance. On the foothills of the Alps, snow will last until June. Going there for a daytrip is worth it anyway.
The fact notwithstanding that April is closer to summer than March, eeather can be wonderful in March and crappy in April - or vice versa. You can basically flip a coin.
Travel Tips for Freiburg im Breisgau
Schauinsland mountain
by Sjalen
Get to the top of the Schauinsland mountain. At 1284 metres, this is one of the highest peaks in the Black Forest. There is a viewing tower at the top and when you have climbed up there you deserve a bit of Black Forest gateau or a beer at the café by the cable car station afterwards. There is also a silver-mining museum and several paths around the peak, some which give you a view across to the Alps if the weather conditions are perfect. More at http://www.schauinsland.com/ Seing the Alps, the French Vosges mountains and then the sunset and the gorgeous mountain colours from the top of Schauinsland.
Bächle
by travelfrosch
One unusual feature of Freiburg are the Bächle, or mini-canals, running throughout the city. Originally built to deliver water and fight fires, the Bächle are now merely decorative. In some places, they are covered, but they are usually left in the open for children and tourists to enjoy. They are a minor consideration for those pushing strollers, but it is usually easy to avoid getting a wheel caught. We did not get Minifrosch wet, so he is free from the legend that all who fall into a Bächle are destined to marry someone from Freiburg.

wooden figures

I found this place with wooden figures, chairs etc in the suburb Kappel in the southeast of Freiburg. There hasn´t been anybody, but I think it might be possible to buy them as well. Don´t they look funny?
Literary Staufen
by Sjalen
For those of you who know German literature, this is the town where Goethe's Faust met the devil in the story. The house in question is still there, just by the main square, and you can also visit the castle ruin high up on its hill, surrounded by vine.
